Nominations Open For BlueStreak-Overtime FCIAC Player Of The Week Award

by:

Just a reminder that you can nominate an athlete for the BlueStreak-Overtime Player of the Week award until noon on Tuesday. Readers as well as coaches and athletic directors are eligible to nominate someone.

Most teams have finished their schedules for the week.

Just please follow the following process:

Nominations will be accepted from noon on Wednesdays until noon the following Tuesday. The award will be based on an athlete’s performance during the week (not on the season to date), from Monday-Saturday.

To nominate someone, please click on the “Send Your Nominations” link at the top right of the blog between the two BlueStreak ads. Please do not use the comments section of this posting. Give me the athlete’s name, school and the reasons for consideration (please include all pertinent statistics).

It should go something like this: “I would like to nominate Mary Smith of the Darien girls hockey team, who had four goals and two assists as we defeated New Canaan, 2-0, and Ludlowe, 3-1.” It is as simple as that. It would also help to include a contact number so we can get in touch with you if your nominee ends up winning.

After the voting closes, I will pick three finalists. Matt Cole, the president of BlueStreak, will then pick the winner, who will be announced each Wednesday and receive a plaque with his/her name on it as well as a T-shirt.

Corcoran, Nowacki BlueStreak-Overtime Players Of The Week

by:

Pat Corcoran a forward on the St. Joseph hockey team, and Tim Nowacki, a freshman goaltender on the New Canaan hockey team, have been named co-winners of the BlueStreak-Overtime FCIAC Player of the Week award.

Corcoran and Nowacki will each receive plaques and T-shirts from BlueStreak.

Corcoran scored a school-record six goals and an assist in the Cadets’ 8-4 win over Ridgefield, then had two goals in an 8-1 victory over Norwich Free Academy.

Nowacki made an impressive debut in his first two career starts, stopping 20 shots in both a 5-0 shutout of Greenwich and 2-1 victory over Darien.

Nominations for next week’s award will be accepted starting at noon today and run until noon next Tuesday.

Here again are the instructions for nominating an athlete.

Poll: What Was Stamford’s Biggest Sports Story In 2009?

by:

The past year was a great one for sports at Westhill High School. The girls soccer team won the first state title by a Stamford school in the sport. The softball team won the FCIAC title, then was invited by Yankees general manager Brian Cashman to appear on the field for the national anthem before a game after they were eliminated from the state tournament on a technicality.

Alli Oakes won her third straight state golf title, while Vanessa Petrini won her second consecutive state tennis title.

And success was not limited to Westhill. In the city game of the year, the Stamford High School boys basketball team overcame an 11-point deficit in the final 2 1/2 minutes of regulation to defeat Trinity Catholic in double overtime to capture the FCIAC championship.

So in a year rich in success, we are asking you: what was the biggest sports story in Stamford over the past 12 months? You have until noon on Sunday to cast your vote.

New Stamford Advocate Website Now Live

by:

Readers who woke up and logged on to the Stamford Advocate website today were greeted by a surprise: a newly designed, much more streamlined and attractive site that is both reader-friendly and has many new features.

One of those is the opportunity for readers to again comment on stories, with one caveat: they must first register so comments can no longer be submitted anonymously.

The final product is the result of a lot of hard work by a lot of people.

Nominations will be accepted from noon on Wednesdays until noon the following Tuesday. The award will be based on an athlete’s performance during the week (not on the season to date), from that Monday-Saturday. Thus, you want to wait to nominate a basketball player until after Friday night if he/she plays two games that week. If a basketball player has just one game on a Tuesday, you can nominate him/her after that game.

For athletes in other sports, please wait until they have finished competing for the week. I suspect most nominations will come in Friday night through Tuesday. You are only allowed to submit one name each week.
