More so than any of the three high school sports seasons, the fall seems to be the time of year for dominant programs, teams with a long-standing history of success.
So in an attempt to create the first poll for the blog, I was thinking, which team in the readers’ eyes is the most dominant?
The Darien High School volleyball team, which is the eight-time defending FCIAC and state champion, and has won 17 conference and 14 state titles since 1990?
The Wilton High School girls soccer team, which has won two state titles in the last three years, four this decade, and has won 10 state and nine league titles in its history?
The New Canaan football team, the three-time defending state champion and reigning league champion, which has won five state titles this decade and 18 state and seven FCIAC titles in its history?
The Greenwich High School girls swimming team, which has won 11 consecutive league titles and every one but two since 1980?
Or the Greenwich High School football team, which has won five league titles this decade, 13 in all, two state titles in the past three years, made six appearances in the state final this decade and has won seven state championships overall?
So, who do you think is the most dominant? Now’s your chance to have your say. I have set up a poll that is open until noon on Sunday. You are allowed to vote once. And you are allowed to comment; I will post them all as long as they are done in an appropriate manner. What was the reason for your vote? What teams should have also been considered — I did not include any boys soccer or field hockey teams because of recent parity?
Make your voice heard, and may the best team win.

…don’t get me wrong, NC Football is close behind Greenwich Football, both are dominant, tradition rich programs! And I would have to say the ’81 Greenwhich High-Trumbull FCIAC football game (whch featured NFL player Kenny Bell) was probably the best FCIAC championship game ever bar none with the Darien-New Canaan game coming in at #2. And they had a repeat performance a week later for the State title that year.
Greenwich Girls Swimming by far is the most dominant FCIAC team in the fall with 3 decades of FCIAC championships….and I would put Greenwich over New Canaan for Football, 13 FCIAC titles to only 7 for NC Football.
You can’t just get rid of the new canaan team. yea so they won only 1 fciac in a row but compare how many fans there were at that game to how many attended all of Darien girls volleyball fciac title games. Combined the number still wouldn’t even come close to New Canaans Fciac game. Not to mention all the hype and controversy there was around that game, it has to go down as one of the greatest Fciac championship games ever. When people talk about fall sports in high school it’s all about football, that’s where all the pressure is, those are the games all the fans go to. New Canaan football has to get the vote
The question was which team has the most dominant program. you have to eliminate the great New Canaan team because they have won one Fciac Title in a row. Danbury x-country has been terific for the past ten years but they also have to be eliminated. the Darien Girls Volleyball team has been the power of the Fciac and the state for over a decade. They would finish a close second to the Greenwich Girls swimming team. They have dominated for three decades.
I am a football guy, but my vote has to go to the Darien Volleyball Team and I don’t even know one player that has played for them. I do know the coach through another sport. I have had the opportunity to watch them in volleyball matches and was amazed at their team work and poise. I know there may be other teams who may feel worthy of this vote, but I remember seeing Darien vs a good Bunnell team in the states down 2 – 0 and trailing in the 3rd game and their coach called a time out and the fans of Bunnell were chanting “start the bus” and Darien came out of that time out and won that game and the next 2 to win the match. That shows true teamwork, poise and chemistry. I know from reading the papers they have had similar matches and have come back to win to keep their streak going at the time. New Canaan football would obviously be my 1A vote.
New Canaan football, based on the size of the town, is a true testament to the youth program and the community that feeds the high school. As cliche as it sounds, it doesn’t always come down to how many wins but how a high school program is built and continues to be built and maintained by great coaches, enthusiastic administrations and supportive parents.
If you go by the records than the
greenwich girls swimming team has to be number one. They won all but two titles since 1980. That’s 27 out of 29 titles. Enough said!!
I am sorry did not realize it was fall, but St. Joe’s Girls soccer has to be included, even more so than Wilton. Two State Championships in a row, and two Number 1 state rankings in a row I beleive not to mention all american, gatorade state players of the year, and several division 1 college players
Ummmm Trinity Boy’s Basketball, St. Joe’s Boy’s Basketball, Harding Boy’s Basketball, even St. Joe’s Girl’s soccer…
Good point CBaird. That’s a team I should have put on the ballot. A rookie mistake.
I think that Danbury Cross Country should be on this list. Under Rob Murray as coach, they have won the New England XC Championships 4 times in the last decade, they have won FCIACs 14 out of the last 17 years, and they finished 5th best in the nation in 2007! They are a dynasty, and they would get my vote.
By the way, I just changed the headline to specify fall sport so it isn’t so vague.
Another non-fall sport. I will have to do a poll at some point for the best FCIAC program period. It would be a tough choice. The problem is I think the sports in season at the time I do it would have an advantage. And teams closer to the Advocate readership area would also have an edge. But we will do it at some point.
danbury wrestling
They would but this is for fall sports.
Darien Lacrosse should be on your list and get my vote, not only have they been dominate in the State but have gained national standing as a top 10 lacrosse program.
