Video Spotlight: Willie Ouellette and Turner Baty

They don’t hate each other, talk behind each other’s back or have a disparaging word to say. In fact, the perceived quarterback controversy between New Canaan High School’s Willie Ouellette and Turner Baty, as I learned after spending an hour with them this afternoon, is no controversy at all.

When Baty, the highly touted quarterback who transferred to New Canaan a week before the season started, showed up on campus, at the same position as Ouellette, who had been working at quarterback the entire preseason and has been playing with many of his current teammates since the fourth grade, everyone assumed fireworks would be set off and coach Lou Marinelli would be dealing with a combustible situation that could threaten his locker room.

All you need to know is that on Baty’s first full day at the school, Ouellette approached him in the cafeteria and the two went out to breakfast.

The relationship between Baty, who has an offer from Stanford and is being recruited by several high profile colleges, and Ouellette has been a close one ever since, in large part because both players have a great deal of class, perspective and a team-first attitude.

I’ll have a column on the two players in tomorrow’s edition of The Advocate. For now, here is a video of Ouellette and Baty discussing their relationship.

Fortt to Sit Out Against Greenwich

Stamford High School football coach Kevin Jones said he was going to let Khairi Fortt make the decision whether he plays in tomorrow night’s home game against Greenwich.

Fortt has had someone make the choice for him.

Fortt’s father, Guy, said he wants his son, who sustained a sprained ACL and bone bruise last week against Ridgefield, to take an extra week to heal and have him return for next Friday’s game against Brien McMahon.

Fortt, who is still experiencing pain, started physical therapy last night.

Cay’s Court: Dealing With a Real Loss

(Cayleigh Griffin, a senior captain on the Trinity Catholic High School volleyball team, will be blogging about her experiences this season.)

By Cayleigh Griffin

Over the course of a season, many teams come across what they refer to as a “bump in the road.” For the Trinity Catholic volleyball team, ours came early with two heartbreaking defeats in our first two appearances.

While I had hoped to express the excitement our team felt after winning our first match against Norwalk in the face of MSG’s cameras, my thoughts have shifted to a fellow classmate at Trinity.

Yesterday, our school was struck with tragedy. One of our fellow senior classmates, Amber Nau, passed away unexpectedly. A feeling of shock and sadness filled the hallways, especially the senior classrooms.  Although I personally was not a close friend of Amber’s, some of my teammates were. Her passing has had a profound effect on them and our school as a community.

As a team, we will support each other and remain strong for those who need us most. The grief we are all experiencing is overwhelming, but for our team, volleyball will help to carry us forward.

My teammates have unanimously agreed to dedicate the remainder of our season to Amber. While our focus and commitment were rock solid before, it is unyielding now. Amber, you are always in our hearts.

Fortt Knocks: Dealing With Injury

(Khairi Fortt is a highly recruited linebacker for the Stamford High School football team. He will be blogging about his experiences this season)

By Khairi Fortt

I finally get a little time to myself so I could acutally sit down and write this blog.

Tough loss last week but we have moved on from that and are focusing on the Cardinals. I went to the orthopedic specialist this morning to get the final verdict on the severity of my knee. Doc told me that I had a sprained ACL and bruised tibia (shin). I’d admit that I was more worried about the opposition trying to cheap-shot me than actually just playing football and making the tackle.

My junior year I was not worried so much about any of this because people didn’t really know who I was. I have decided to stick to my old habits and play some aggressive, fun football.

Over the course of these past few days, my recovery has been going good. I can walk up and down stairs fairly well now and more fluidly. Tomorrow I’ll go down to the pool to see how I react to mild force on my knee. Hopefully I will see much improvement by Friday, but if not I won’t push it. Greenwich is a big game and one that I would love to play in, but I don’t think it would be wise or fair to the team to risk making my injury worse.

The team is looking great at practice. We have moved a couple players around in our schemes and some new faces have arrived at practice today. Looking forward to having another productive day of practice and hopefully we prepare properly for the game.

Go Knights!

Video Spotlight: Meghan Caldwell

As evidenced by today’s 2-1 win over St. Joseph, this could potentially be the best season ever for Westhill High School’s girls soccer team. The Vikings have a lot of returning talent, some good young players and, most importantly, are as close off the field as on for the first time in recent memory.

One of the big keys to the season is senior co-captain Meghan Caldwell, who made her first appearance today since dislocating her right knee last month. Caldwell is not only a talented player but a strong leader — she started running captains’ practices in late June, much earlier than most teams do.

I caught up with Caldwell after today’s game to get her read on the Vikings this season.

Fortt Day to Day

Stamford High School linebacker Khairi Fortt met with team doctor Dan Zelazny this morning. The good news is that his injury is not serious: he has a bruised bone in his lower leg and a sprained ACL. His return to the team is day to day and his status uncertain for Friday night’s home game with Greenwich.

Petrini Headed to Rutgers

Vanessa Petrini, the best girls tennis player in Westhill High School history, gave a verbal commitment yesterday to play at Rutgers.

Petrini, a senior, is the two-time defending State Open champion and a highly rated player in New England and nationally.

Petrini is in school right now but I hope to have more from her later.
