Fortt Cleared to Play….But Will He?

According to his coach, Khairi Fortt has been cleared to play for Stamford High School Friday night when it hosts Greenwich.

The question now is will he.

Stamford coach Kevin Jones said tonight that Fortt, who injured his right knee in the second quarter of Thursday night’s loss to Ridgefield, will make the decision whether he will be on the field against the Cardinals.

“It’s a tolerance issue,” Jones said. “It’s a low-grade strain. It’s up to him.”

According to his father, Guy, Fortt has an appointment with the Stamford team doctor, Dan Zelazny, at 10:45 tomorrow morning for an evaluation. Guy Fortt said this afternoon they want to determine the exact nature of the injury. An MRI on Friday revealed no damage to the ACL, MCL or meniscus.

Jones said Fortt, who did not practice today, would have to do so by Wednesday to play against Greenwich.

“We have a team rule that if you don’t practice, you don’t play,” Jones said.

Fortt to Visit Doctor Tomorrow

Here’s the latest on the Khairi Fortt knee watch: He is going to visit the Stamford High School team doctor, Dan Zelazny, at 10:45 tomorrow morning for an evaluation.

Right now, according to Fortt’s father, Guy, not much more is known about the extent of the injury since Friday’s MRI, when it was determined there was no damage done to his ACL, MCL or meniscus.

Fortt was in Florida over the weekend for his grandmother’s funeral. Guy said his son is walking better and is no longer experiencing pain while climbing stairs.

Obviously his status for Friday night’s game with Greenwich is uncertain.

Fortt hopeful for Greenwich?

One minor update to the Khairi Fortt injury situation since there is a lot of interest out there. His father Guy just called. Fortt seems to have escaped a serious injury to his right knee. Fortt does not need crutches and Guy said there is the possibility his son can see some time next weekend against Greenwich, but that the doctor is still trying to pinpoint the exact nature of the injury.

The Fortt family is en route to Florida for the funeral of Guy’s mother tomorrow and will be back Sunday morning. If I get any more news before then I will certainly pass it along.

Fortt Update: No ACL or MCL Damage

I just got an update on Khairi Fortt from his father, Guy. Fortt had an MRI this morning that came back negative for any damage to his ACL, MCL or meniscus. The doctor is still studying the results to see if there could be a small tear or sprain. No word what that could mean in terms of how long he would be sidelined.

Fortt’s MRI at 9:30

I just got a quick text message from Khairi Fortt’s father, Guy. Fortt, who injured his knee in the second quarter of Stamford High School’s 23-6 loss to Ridgefield last night, is having an MRI this morning at 9:30. Guy said his son is feeling better this morning and has better movement in his knee. I will keep you updated.

Fortt Injured; Jones Goes Off on Official

Stamford High School linebacker Khairi Fortt was injured midway through the second quarter of tonight’s 23-6 loss to Ridgefield. Fortt, who played his first series at running back, hurt his right knee on his initial carry but stayed in the game. After a 4-yard gain on the next play he walked slowly off to the sideline complaining that his knee was hurt.

Dan Zelazny, the Stamford team doctor, examined Fortt at halftime and did not clear him to return. Zelazny said it was hard to determine the extent of the injury, but that there was not swelling, which is a positive sign. Fortt will have an MRI tomorrow. Fortt said he expects to return next week while Stamford coach Kevin Jones said he thinks his star will be out for a few weeks.

Jones saved his choicest words for referee Tom Brown, who besides missing some obvious calls did something that was absolutely inexcusable for an official.

During the first quarter Brown almost made Fortt leave the game because he thought that Fortt’s pants did not extend far enough below the knee (they certainly appeared no different than any other players’). Jones complained during a stoppage, then raised the situation again with Brown while contending another call.

Brown said to Jones, “I’ve got to teach him a lesson, he’s not in college yet.”

This is not a case of Jones misunderstanding what Brown said or the story getting lost in translation: I was standing right next to Jones when it happened.

Jones was understandably livid at the time and had some choice words for Brown after the game, some of which can be repeated here.

“This is par for the course when you get people that think they are doing my job for me,” Jones said. “That guy should get fired and never do a game again. It was clearly a case of he just wanted us to have a problem. It was a rough night for Tom Brown. It hurt us having to deal with all that.”
