CIAC Approves New Football Division And Playoff Format

As expected, the CIAC today approved a new football playoff system that will go into effect starting next year.

The CIAC will go to a four-division system like it does in most other sports, with eight teams qualifying for the state tournament in each class. The season will be expanded by a week to allow for an extra round in the playoffs.

The change should be greeted with universal approval.

Here is the release by the CIAC.

  1. I like the change, although Dec 11th for the last game is a very long season…any thoughts on that?

  2. Personally, I would love it if the CIAC had three divisions instead of four and started a week earlier instead of later, especially because of possible conflicts with winter sports.
But after having to deal with six state championships and too many unappealing playoff games for so long, I have to credit the state for taking a big step toward solving what had been a glaring problem with its most popular sport.

  3. Also keep in mind that the additional week only applies to 8 teams.
