Poll: Which Team Was The Best Sports Story Of The Fall Season?

There is still a little more than a day until winter, and because of vacation, previews and launching a new award on the blog, I was remiss in posting what I consider an interesting poll question: Which FCIAC team was the best sports story of the fall season?

I have included three teams that won league and state titles, one team that won an FCIAC title and reached a state final, a team that won a fourth straight state championship and another that won a state title, the first-ever in school history.

There are programs here that have had long-term success and others that are new to standing on the pedestal.

It is pretty straightforward and you have a week to vote starting from……NOW!

  1. WHAT!!! No saint Joes winning a state championship. what else could be the best sports story… New Caanan has won states the last four years, and staples didn’t win anything but the fciac championship(which isnt a big deal.) St. Joes had a story book season with ups, downs, and tragedy, and to cap it all off, they are going to be getting a ring on their hand for the first time in nineteen years. i think you should add them.

  2. Dave: You are right. I forgot that and should have included them. I was thinking too local to Advocate readership. My bad.

  3. Not necessary the best team but one could argue they were-the New Canaan football controversy story with Baty moving into town.

    Central football

    Darien field hockey

    Staples football

Norwalk football-Tucci taking four consecutive knees. That game will be talked about for over 100 years.

  4. Tucci made the biggest mistake in High School sports history agree with you young/abe. Westhill winning in Girl’s soccer however is the best story of the Fall Season.

  5. Darien domination of the FCIAC in boys and girls sports.

Westhill softball team going to Yankee Stadium after a substituting mistake cost them the game

Norwalk football team kneeling down with time still remaining in the game.

The girl kicker from New CAnaan kicking five extra points in a game against Seymour.

Staples kicker setting a state record for field goals.

  6. Staples football choking AGAIN in a big spot, while New Canaan wins its 4th straight state title.

  7. Don’t call it an FCIAC story if you are not going to include all the FCIAC teams. North of the parkway never gets mentioned, unless its to somehow rip their teams. There’s always a negative twist on their wins by the advocate.

  8. Full Disclosure – I second Westhill’s soccer win!

  9. FCIAC Fanatic (and all others): I have to admit I used a column I wrote the other day as a basis for setting up the vote, and thus the choices are weighted to schools in The Advocate readership area, though I strongly disagree with you about our coverage “ripping” teams. We just focus our attention on schools in our readership area, but not at the expense of “ripping” others.
By the way, and I am only expressing my own opinion only because I did so in last week’s column, as a sportswriter the best story to me was the Westhill girls soccer team, and the best team I covered, and by a wide margin, was the Staples boys soccer team.
