The past year was a great one for sports at Westhill High School. The girls soccer team won the first state title by a Stamford school in the sport. The softball team won the FCIAC title, then was invited by Yankees general manager Brian Cashman to appear on the field for the national anthem before a game after they were eliminated from the state tournament on a technicality.
Alli Oakes won her third straight state golf title, while Vanessa Petrini won her second consecutive state tennis title.
And success was not limited to Westhill. In the city game of the year, the Stamford High School boys basketball team overcame an 11-point deficit in the final 2 1/2 minutes of regulation to defeat Trinity Catholic in double overtime to capture the FCIAC championship.
So in a year rich in success, we are asking you: what was the biggest sports story in Stamford over the past 12 months? You have until noon on Sunday to cast your vote.

Thanks John. People like Sam slip under the radar but represent what high school sports are all about.
I just read the article referenced by Full – it’s excellent.
And the piece on Sam Cowit was also spot on. Sam played travel soccer with my daughter for many years; she’s a great young lady and a true team player.
Very well done Dave. Thanks!
Thanks Full. As always I appreciate the kind words.
The vote here is for the Black Knights win over TCHS. The game was “electric” and featured lots of storylines none more better than the other (i.e. TCHS dominance of SHS , Moriarty’s first FCIAC title, Chris Evans, etc.)
And to play that game which was televised on t.v. as well as for the FCIAC championship with a sold out crowd makes for the best game of the year.
The Biggest Surprise of the Year and perhaps the biggest “upset” of the year would have to be the 2009 Girls’ Soccer Team from Westhill. The team “shocked” the local scene with their success. Congrats !
David, Your article today was fantastic as it covered both of these items. Well done once again.

….and let’s not forget the first-ever trip to both FCIAC and States for Westhill lacrosse….
