Silas’ Postcard From San Antonio: Going From The Cold, To The Cold

(Recent King graduate Silas Redd is in San Antonio this week for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, the 10th anniversary of the bowl. Past alumni of the bowl include the likes of Tim Tebow, Terrelle Pryor, Noel Devine, Mark Sanchez, Adrian Peterson and Reggie Bush. Redd who won the ‘G Award’ at Football University’s Top Gun this past June in Florida as the elite camp’s top offensive player. Redd, who is heading to Penn State, will be blogging about his week in San Antonio.)

I took a 7:30 a.m. flight from freezing cold Connecticut and was hoping to land in warm and sunny San Antonio. Unfortunately the weather here in San Antonio is reminding me way too much of Connecticut though. I’m hoping it gets a little warmer.

When I got to the hotel I was greeted by a lot of nice people, took pictures and checked in. Then I signed hundreds of autographs, which is such an honor for me. I still can’t believe people want my autograph sometimes, it’s pretty cool. Then we got our equipment and let me say we got a surprise for everyone with our cleats — they’re hot.

Practice went really well today. Our defense looks really good; there are a lot of great athletes on that side. Our offense is definitely going to be tough also; we’re still learning the offense right now though. For the East team we’re building a nice brotherhood and we all get along.

During lunch today, for example, Chris Martin threw an empty Gatorade bottle at one of our teammates, I won’t say who. It was all in good fun and everyone knows that Chris threw it except for the player that got hit. I guess if he reads this blog he’ll find out.

Khairi’s Postcard From San Antonio: Being A Top Player Is A Good Sign

(Recent Stamford High School graduate Khairi Fortt is in San Antonio this week for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, the 10th anniversary of the bowl. Past alumni of the bowl include the likes of Tim Tebow, Terrelle Pryor, Noel Devine, Mark Sanchez, Adrian Peterson and Reggie Bush. Fortt won the ‘G Award’ at Football University’s Top Gun this past June in Florida as the elite camp’s top defensive player. Fortt, who is heading to Penn State, will be blogging about his week in San Antonio.)

Finally, I made it to San Antonio. The flight yesterday was horrible — it was real windy, I’m just happy I got here. When I got to the hotel it was really good to see some familiar faces, like Nick Forbes and Chris Martin — who I know from Football University Top Gun.

When I’m around such great players like all of these guys, it’s like they’re just like me. At home, we’re all considered ‘the man’ and then you come here and everyone’s a star. It’s kind of cool to be around so much talent.

At the hotel we were all busy from the start. At first I thought it was alright, taking pictures and checking in — it wasn’t too bad. And then we had to sign autographs, which basically caught me off guard. I’ve signed autographs before, like when I visit Penn State. but never 300 or so in one day like I did yesterday. That was crazy.

[Monday] I just had my first practice and I think it went pretty well. I was a little thrown off with all of the new plays — I guess I didn’t expect that, but I’ll get the hang of it. The coaches have been real cool and I’m learning more than I thought I would. I’m just so happy to be here.

Fortt, Redd To Blog From San Antonio

Recent graduates Khairi Fortt of Stamford High School and Silas Redd of King left today for San Antonio, to begin practice for Saturday’s prestigious U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which will be broadcast on NBC at 1 p.m.

With the coordination of the public relations people down there, both Fortt and Redd are going to be blogging, sending brief postcards home, during the week. There will also be pictures of both players.

I will get you more details as we set things up.

In the meantime, here is a column I wrote on the two players in today’s paper.
