Michael Megale’s drive toward becoming a major league baseball player is going to be put on hold again.
Megale, the former Stamford High School star who earned a job this summer with the Sussex Skyhawks in the Can-Am League after a five-year hiatus from competitive ball, sustained a season-ending injury last Thursday when he collided with a teammate in pursuit of a fly ball and suffered a deep thigh bruise.
Though the 27-year-old Megale said he hopes to get back before the season ends on Sept. 6, he has been told the injury will likely take 4-6 weeks to heal.
“I’m living my dream and then the next thing you know I’m back home with an injury,” Megale said. “It’s frustrating, but then again it’s part of the game. I would regret it if I didn’t go after the ball. My approach when I play is that I put it all on the line.”
Megale sounded more pleased that he made the catch near the left-field foul line. The tough part is Megale was just finding his groove. He was making his ninth start in a row, and first at shortstop, the position he played when he helped lead Stamford to the 2001 state title. He was on a four-game hitting streak.
Megale said the Skyhawks have extended his contract through next season and he is excited to get himself healthy and pick up where he left off.
I’ll have much more on Meagle in an upcoming issue of The Advocate.
