Catch WWPT’s New FCIAC Football Pregame Show Tomorrow

by:

When I was a student at Staples High School, one of the greatest sources of pride was WWPT, the student-run radio station. Two of my closest friends had their own shows and played music we shared and talked about throughout the day. And it was always a source to listen to Staples sporting events if you could not stay after school.

Many years later, not much has changed. If anything, WWPT, located at 90.3 on your FM dial, has only gotten better.

The station last year won John Drury National High School Radio Awards in four categories and was nominated in nine this year, including Best Sports Play-By-Play, Best Sportscast and Best Sportstalk Program.

Now, the play-by-play team of Eric Gallanty and DJ Sixsmith is upping the ante. Tomorrow, prior to the big game between Staples and Ridgefield, Gallanty and Sixsmith will be hosting a new pregame show, called FCIAC Football Weekly, at 3 p.m. The duo describe it as the high school radio version of ESPN’s College GameDay. They will be broadcasting live from Ridgefield’s Tiger Hollow, and the show will include interviews with Wreckers coach Marce Petroccio and Ridgefield’s star lineman, Tommy Jordan.

Of course you can listen to the game later at night.

So if you can’t make it to the first real big game of the FCIAC season, tune in tomorrow at 90.3 or click here.

Wilton Wins Overtime Team Of The Week Award

by:

Wilton High School’s 27-14 win over St. Joseph last Saturday made a big impression on voters and our selection committee. The Warriors are the latest winners of the Overtime High School Football Team of the Week award, which is sponsored by BlueStreak Sports Training, Garden Catering and The Stamford Advocate.

The Warriors received 615 votes, 63.4 percent of the 970 cast, to easily outdistance the other two finalists, Staples (315 votes) and New Canaan (40).

The vote counts for 50 percent. The Warriors were also the choice of the selection panel, which consists of Sean Patrick Bowley, the online sports producer for Hearst Connecticut Newspapers; Pat Pickens, the sports editor of the Fairfield Citizen-News; and Tim Parry, who runs the FCIAC Football Blog. That accounts for the other 50 percent.

Wilton will receive a trophy and 60 T-Shirts courtesy of award sponsors BlueStreak Sports Training, Garden Catering and The Stamford Advocate.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote. The feedback for the award has been most encouraging.

Three more finalists will be selected after this weekend’s game and the voting will begin for our second winner on Sunday, so check back.

Morehouse, Jones, Moriarty BlueStreak-Overtime FCIAC Players Of The Week

by:

Tucker Morehouse of the Darien High School football team, Reg Jones of the Greenwich boys soccer team and Heather Moriarty of the Fairfield Ludlowe cross country team are the latest winners of the BlueStreak-Overtime FCIAC Player of the Week awards.

Morehouse, Jones and Moriarty will each receive plaques and T-shirts from BlueStreak.

The performances of Morehouse and Jones led to co-winners for the male prize.

Morehouse had 12 tackles, three sacks and three forced fumbles, the last of which he returned for a touchdown, to lead the Blue Wave to a 25-13 win over Danbury.

Jones scored a hat trick in the Cardinals’ 4-0 win over St. Joseph and had a goal and an assist to key a 2-1 victory over Trumbull.

Moriarty, one of the FCIAC’s top runners, finished first in a four-way meet in which the Falcons went 3-1, setting a new Ludlowe course record with a time of 18:19.

Nominations are open now until Tuesday at noon for this week’s winners.

To nominate an athlete, click on the replica of the T-shirt the winners receive on the right-hand side of this blog, below the BlueStreak ad. Then email in the name of the person you are nominating. Please include all of the player’s statistics for the week as well as the team results.

The award will be judged on games/matches played Monday through Saturday of each week. Please wait until an athlete is done competing for the week to submit your nomination.

Joseph Signed To Raiders Practice Squad

by:

Alex Joseph came home from Philadelphia last night to surprise his mother and watch his 11-year-old brother’s football game.

The former Stamford High School star ended up getting the best surprise of all.

Joseph got a call this evening from the Oakland Raiders, who are signing him to their practice squad.

“I got a two-for-one deal,” said the linebacker, who last year helped lead Temple to its first bowl game in 30 years. “I was upstairs with my brother, I got him an iTouch and we were playing with it when my agent called and said the Raiders were going to call in a couple minutes.”

Joseph was signed as a free agent by the Packers moments after last April’s NFL Draft ended, but was cut at the end of preseason.

“I was down at first but then I realized it was out of my hands,” Joseph said. “You can’t do anything about it. I went back to Philadelphia and was working out, spending time with my girlfriend and dog, and my old teammates at Temple.”

Joseph will fly to Oakland in the morning, becoming the third high school player from Stamford, along with Vlad Ducasse (Jets) and Nate Collins (Giants), to join the NFL this season.

“I’m very excited,” Joseph said. “I’ve been waiting for this call for a while. I’ve been sitting around. I want to put the pads back on.”

Stamford-Brien McMahon Football Game Moved To 3:30

by:

Friday’s football game between Brien McMahon and Stamford, at Boyle Stadium, has been moved from 6 to 3:30 p.m.

The change was confirmed by Stamford athletic director Pete Samperi. The reason is reportedly a precaution following a shooting incident last weekend.

Samperi refused to comment, other than to say the decision was made by the board of education.

The Norwalk Team Of The Week T-Shirt

by:

Besides a trophy, the Overtime High School Football Team of the Week also receives 60 T-Shirts, courtesy of BlueStreak Sports Training, Garden Catering and The Stamford Advocate, with the school helmet and colors on the front.

Norwalk High School was our first winner last week. I just picked up the first batch of shirts that the Bears will receive — they were made by Ultimate Ink, the company run by area running guru Jim Gerweck.

Just a little promotion so players can see what they can look forward to if their teams are honored this season (sorry again for the side view, for some reason my iPhone T-Shirt photos don’t reproduce properly on the blog!).

Vote For The Overtime Team Of The Week: Staples, New Canaan Or Wilton?

by:

The voting is now open to crown the Overtime High School Football Team of the Week award, sponsored by BlueStreak Sports Training, Garden Catering and The Stamford Advocate.

Norwalk was the first winner last week.

The three finalists are: Staples, a 35-6 winner over Norwalk; New Canaan, which defeated Trinity Catholic, 48-8; and Wilton, which upset St. Joseph, 27-14.

The winning team, thanks to BlueStreak and Garden Catering, will receive a trophy and 60 T-Shirts with the award logo on the front in the primary color of the school.

The voting is open until noon on Wednesday and will count for 50 percent. The other half will come from the decision of a committee made up of Sean Patrick Bowley, the online sports producer for Hearst Connecticut Newspapers, Pat Pickens, the sports editor of the Fairfield Citizen-News, and Tim Parry, who runs the FCIAC Football Blog.

If the decision of the voters and the majority of the committee differs, the tie will be settled by The Advocate sports department.

Video Spotlight: Bobby Distler’s Touchdown Run

by:

I’m no Sean Patrick Bowley with the camera, but after standing with him on the sideline at today’s New Canaan-Trinity Catholic football game, I became emboldened enough to attempt to shoot some game action on my iPhone.

Sure enough, on my first attempt I was lucky enough to capture Bobby Distler’s 19-yard TD run, the final score for the Rams in their 48-8 win.

It won’t win me an Oscar, but it is at least good enough to post.

Here it is.
