Video Spotlight: New Canaan Quarterback Matt Milano Previews The Class L Final

Matt Milano has been shattering the record books in his first season as the starting quarterback for the New Canaan High School football team. The junior has already set school marks for most passing yards (2,766) and touchdowns (39) in a season.

Milano’s development in the spread offense is a big reason why the Rams are 10-1 and will be playing for a fifth straight state title, in Saturday’s Class L final against unbeaten Masuk.

I caught up with Milano before practice today, as he discussed the keys to victory and his remarkable year.

Starting Sunday Vote For The Overtime FCIAC Fall Team Of The Year

The high school fall season comes to an official end on Saturday with the completion of the state football championships. And we still have one award to bestow: the Overtime FCIAC Fall Team of the Year.

The award is sponsored by BlueStreak Sports Training, Garden Catering and the Stamford Advocate. The winning team will receive a plaque and T-Shirts with the school logo and colors on the front.

Starting Sunday morning we will open the vote, which will run until noon on Friday, to pick the team you think was the best one in the FCIAC this fall. We will not have a complete list of finalists until the completion of the state football games. The one requirement to be considered: the team had to win at least an FCIAC or state title.

Right now we have three definite finalists: the Darien field hockey team, the Staples boys soccer team and the New Canaan girls swim team. There will be at least one football team, and there are still a couple of non-football teams being considered.

So check back Sunday morning to see who the finalists are and to start voting for the team you think was the most outstanding in the FCIAC this fall.

Video Spotlight: New Canaan’s Ryan Shullman Discusses Saturday’s “Family” Rivalry

While the anticipated showdown between the high-potent offenses of the New Canaan and Masuk football teams is the predominant storyline to Saturday’s CIAC Class L championship game, on Monday I learned of another compelling one.

Rams nose guard Ryan Shullman has a cousin, Matt Duignan, who is a starting linebacker for Masuk. The two have always wanted to but have yet to ever play against each other.

Until this Saturday. Both players will be on the field together for special teams and said that, while they are extremely close, neither will have a problem trying to put the other on his butt if necessary.

I’ll have the story in Friday’s Advocate, but here is a video interview I shot with Shullman yesterday at New Canaan.

The Overtime Player Of The Year Award: To Vote Or Not To Vote?

Andres Torres of the Norwalk boys soccer team and Caroline Edison of the Fairfield Warde girls cross country team were selected today as our BlueStreak-Overtime FCIAC Fall Players of the Year in a vote that was held during the past seven days.

The process generated some feedback, some pro, some negative about choosing the winners by a vote, rather than by having us name the winners like we do with our weekly award.

One FCIAC coach, in a sentiment that was most prevalent by critics, wrote a nice note expressing an appreciation about having an award like this, but a concern that this is nothing more than a popularity contest.

It is probably a good time to explain why we opted to go with this process — and will continue to do so.

First of all, the most important thing we do in selecting the finalists is say to ourselves: if this person wins, is he/she deserving or will it make the award less legitimate. I think if you read the bios on all 12 finalists, you can see that each one of them would be a worthy winner.

Second, by opening this up to a vote, it allows all the readers to be a part of the process. The blog received about 21,000 votes during the past week. Sure, we welcome the traffic, but not at the expense of quality.

The biggest complaint, of course, is that this is nothing more than a popularity contest. On a certain level, of course it is. There are people who vote for the person they think is most deserving, and many more who use email and social networking avenues to campaign. But I can also guarantee you, if we picked the winners, we would get just as many complaints by people that we selected the wrong person.

I think a little perspective is in order. While we are ecstatic people have taken to this award, let’s keep in mind that this is a blog award, nothing more and nothing less. There is just as much politics in the All-FCIAC and All-State voting, which is a far more important honor.

The reason for doing this — and the other awards we hold — is to recognize the accomplishments of high school athletes. This provided a forum for the cross country runner and swimmer — two sports that do not generate a lot of publicity — to be on an equal platform with the football and soccer player. There are 12 athletes here who may not have been as well known as a week ago — and deserve to be.

So let’s try and keep this all in perspective. There is no perfect system to do this, and we think between our selecting the players of the week and you selecting the players of the year, we have the best system possible.

Thanks to all of you who took the time to vote and have been supportive of the ideal behind it.

Torres, Edison BlueStreak-Overtime FCIAC Fall Players Of The Year

Andres Torres

Andres Torres of the Norwalk High School boys soccer team and Caroline Edison of the Fairfield Warde cross country team have been voted the winners of the BlueStreak-Overtime FCIAC Fall Player of the Year awards.

Torres and Edison will receive trophies from BlueStreak and quarter-zip sweatshirts from The Stamford Advocate.

Torres received 903 of the 2,907 cast for males, or 31 percent.

Torres led the FCIAC in scoring with 27 goals and three assists as the Bears clinched the top seed in the FCIAC Tournament. He finished as the second-leading scorer in school history.

Edison got 3,323 of the 6,034 cast for females, or 55 percent. It is the second-highest total, by 56 votes, in the three Player of the Year votes we have held.

Edison came on strong during the postseason to finish second in the FCIAC championship and first in the CIAC Class L championship. She also came in 10th at the State Open and ninth at the New England championship, as well as a fourth-place finish at the New Balance Invitational.

The BlueStreak-Overtime Player of the Week awards will resume the first week in January for the winter season.

Also, starting Sunday, we will hold one final vote, for the overall Overtime Fall Team of the Year. The complete list of finalists will be announced after this weekend’s state championship football games.

New Canaan Wins Overtime Team Of The Week Award

It came down to a tiebreaker, but New Canaan High School is the final winner this fall of the Overtime Team of the Week award.

The award is sponsored by BlueStreak Sports Training, Garden Catering and The Stamford Advocate. The Rams will receive a plaque and 60 T-shirts with their team helmet and lettering in school colors.

New Canaan finished third in a relatively close vote, receiving 241, or 28 percent of the 863 cast. Norwalk won the voting with 361, followed by Staples with 261. The vote counts for 50 percent.

New Canaan was the unanimous choice of our selection committee, which consists of Sean Patrick Bowley, the online sports producer for Hearst Connecticut Newspapers; Pat Pickens, the sports editor of the Fairfield Citizen-News; and Tim Parry, who runs the FCIAC Football Blog. That accounts for the other 50 percent.

While the Bears had an impressive and emotional win in coach Pete Tucci’s final game, the Rams’ 42-14 rout of arch-rival Darien, which they needed to qualify for the state tournament, was the deciding factor in breaking the tie.

This is the last week for the award this fall. I want to thank Sean, Pat and Tim for their time and expertise, and everyone out there for making this a much bigger success than we had hoped.

Along those lines, starting on December 12, the day after the state championship football games, we will be conducting a vote for the overall Overtime FCIAC Team of the Year. It will include teams from all sports, and like our current Players of the Year award will be conducted by a vote.

Also, thanks to the continued support of all our sponsors, the following week we will begin another round of the Overtime Team of the Week award for the winter, which also will include all sports. Details will be forthcoming soon.
