Three teams that produced signature wins are this week’s finalists for the Overtime Winter FCIAC Team of the Week award.
Your choices are: The New Canaan girls basketball team, the Darien wrestling team and the St. Joseph boys hockey team.
The winning team, thanks to sponsors BlueStreak Sports Training, Garden Catering and The Stamford Advocate, will receive a plaque and 25 T-Shirts.
After starting the week with a loss to St. Joseph, the Rams bounced back to defeat Staples, and then on Friday, behind a 37-point, 9-assist, 4-steal performance by Sarah Mannelly, handed Ridgefield its first league loss, 67-61. New Canaan is now 10-3.
The Blue Wave posted four wins on Saturday: 63-18 over Vinal Tech, 66-18 over Cheney Tech, 59-17 over Wolcott Tech and 46-27 over Brookfield to improve to 19-3, and break the school record of 16 victories in a season. Darien toppled Brien McMahon earlier in the week, 67-12.
In a battle between two of the three remaining unbeaten teams in conference play, the Cadets routed Wilton on Saturday night, 7-1. Christian Keator scored two goals while five other players also scored. St. Joseph is now 8-2 over all.
The voting is open until noon on Wednesday and will count for 50 percent. The other 50 percent will be based on the decision of a committee made up of Sean Patrick Bowley, the online sports producer for Hearst Connecticut Newspapers, Chris McNamee, the sports editor of the Stamford Advocate, and Lou Marinelli, the football coach at New Canaan High School.
If the decision of the voters and the majority of the committee differs, I will break the tie.
So vote below and check back to find out who is this week’s Overtime FCIAC Winter Team of the Week.

BLUE WAVE WRESTLING
Darien deserves… GO blue Wave!
Darien beat teams that they weren’t “supposed” to beat
lets go girls nc basketball!!!!!!! if all of you haven’t noticed they just beat a team thats undefeated in the fciac…soooooo i think thats a big accomplishment!! good luck to all the other teams but leeeesssss goo ncc!!!!!!!
New Canaan beat teams that they weren’t supposed to beat, coming together as a team and getting a win. St. Joe’s and Darien beat teams that they should’ve beat, so I think that New Canaan definitely deserves to be on there. Just because they had a tougher week, overall their wins are much more noticed than Darien and St. Joe’s.
Wait- I would love to know why New Canaan has so many votes. They are not having half the season that Wave wrestling or St. Joes hockey is, and since this is a weekly contest, there is no reason they should win. Both Darien and St. Joes are undefeated this week, while New Canaan has one loss. I’m usually not biased about this sort of thing, but I’m really shocked.
Ditto what Jack, Wave, John, Dave, Jackson, Jason Walker, and Wrestling Fan have said. Go Blue Wave Wrestling! What accomplishments! You’ve got grit!YOU ARE CHAMPIONS!!!!
vote wave
NC Basketball better not win… St. Joes and Darien absolutely dominated this past week, while NC had a loss. Not trying to be biased as I’m from Darien, but no team that lost should beat out two perfect, dominant teams.
NC PRIDE
Keep up the votes ITS ALL OURS
Wrestling Fan… I know who you are! Couldn’t agree more. This program is the BEST!
Darien deserves… GO blue Wave!
Team of the week or not Marty Crouse has done a phenomenal job with St. Joe’s in the short time the program has existed. He deserves a lot of credit!
Is the St. Joe hockey coach still playing his son’s line 35-40 minutes of a 45 minute game like last year?
I have been following the Blue Wave wrestling team for 16 years. Back then they would forfeit 5, 6, 7 weight classes each match. They would take a beating day in and day out. It took their coach about 13 years to reach 100 wins, less than 10 a year. Over the last few yeas the numbers of wrestlers grew and this year had the most numbers ever which makes each weight class work harder if they want to wrestle varsity. The nine seniors on this team worked hard for 4 years and now their hard work has paid off. They will leave Darien with the most wins ever and have a great chance to finish the year 22 -4, which is outstanding. Coach Vano and Coach Gaffney have worked hard with these kids. Not taking anything away from the other 2 finalists, Darien has not been in the spotlight EVER and this is a great chance for them to be redognized for all their hard work.
I’m following New Canaan very closely and I talk to Bo during the season — I have made an effort to talk to coaches in all sports since starting this award to make sure it is all-inclusive. New Canaan will be a finalist I am sure at some point. Since it is based on weekly performance I try to keep track of the quality and not just the number of wins each week. St. Joseph’s win over Wilton last week was the biggest one in the league.
hey dave, st. joe’s hockey team? are you foillowing new canaan boys hockey? undefeated and ranked #1 in nthe state by 2 polls. shouldn’t they be considered for “team of the week”?
The Darien wrestling team – Go Blue!!!
LETS GO Wave!!
BLUE WAVE!!!
Christina Loop Rocks! Go New Canaan Girls BBall!
My apologies, I didn’t mean to be disqualifying NC Hockey.
Best of luck to all the teams, I think everyone can see who I think should win, and understand my reasoning behind it. To me, breaking and exceeding the previous school record for wins in a season is the largest accomplishment of the teams placed here.
I don’t disagree with you on Darien’s accomplishments; I made them a finalist. I won’t say more because I don’t want anyone to think I’m trying to influence the vote. All I’ll say is I hope people will use this forum to speak on behalf of teams rather than knock the other finalists.
I mean advertising amongst the students, not in a commercial fashion. Maybe marketing is a better word.
And I didn’t read closely enough; my mistake, 2-1. But still, if both teams other teams are undefeated, what reason is there for a team with a loss to be leading in votes? And even though I’m biased to the Wave, their wrestling team had 5 wins, I feel like that alone warrants a victory. Breaking a school record since ’79: that’s quite an achievement.
New Canaan was 2-1 and there was no advertising: I picked them as a finalist.
Hold on a second… NC girls basketball has so many votes, why?? They went 1-1 this week… Wave wrestling went 5-0 and St. Joes hockey went 1-0…
It’s clear who should actually win this award and who actually just advertised a little better….
As a wrestler in northern Connecticut, i gotta give mad props to Darien. They’re team is one of the best i have ever wrestled
Blue Wave wrestling has had a truly amazing year. Not only have they broken the school record of 16 wins by 3, to make it 19 wins, they also broke the record for most consecutive wins, now set at 14 and growing. They have a match tommorow against Warren Harding and it is their senior night.
I have never seen a harder working team come out of this program, they practice longer and harder than the rest and it is finally starting to show.
They deserve this award, they have earned it.
Wave has done the best by far. 5 wins, each by a landslide, in one week, breaking a 40+ year record by 3, and dominating a team that hurt them so bad last year makes for an under appreciated team. Its too bad that nobody really notices these guys. Hardest working team i have seen in a long time
Wave Wrestling!
WAVE WRASSLIN
Darien Wrestling has truly had a special year; winning the derby invitation (its first tournament victory ever) beating New Canaan & Stamford for the first time in 20+ years, and breaking the school record held since 1979… thats pretty impressive.
Wave wrestling just broke a school record and is about to get 20 wins in a season tomorrow. It’s a shame how little publicity this team gets, just because wrestling is not the most popular sport.
Wave wrestling hasn’t lost in 15 matches they deserve to win!
It is a crying shame if SJ Hockey does not win this. If the writers and fans do not put SJ Hockey in first based on how they are playing, then people just are not paying attention to high school sports!
I would like to vote for St. Joseph hockey for team of the week
waveeeeeeeeee wrastllinnnn
I would like to vote for St. Joseph hockey for team of the week
