Two schools that won league championships, two boys soccer teams that reached the semifinals of the conference tournament, a girls team that defeated it biggest rival and the winner of the biggest football game so far this season are on the menu for consideration as this week’s Overtime FCIAC Team of the Week.
The finalists: the Danbury boys cross country team, the Ridgefield girls cross country team, the Norwalk field hockey team, the Trumbull boys soccer team, the New Canaan boys soccer team and the Staples football team.
The winner will get T-shirts with our new logo courtesy of BlueStreak Sports Training, Garden Catering, the Stamford Advocate, Karl Chevrolet and Innovative Health and Rehabilitation.
The Hatters, behind Thomas Moore and Nicholas Carlsen finishing third and fourth, respectively, held off Darien to win the FICAC title.
The Tigers, with four runners finishing in the top 12 spots, outdistanced Greenwich and rolled to the FCIAC championship. On Saturday they came back to win the CIAC Class LL title.
The Bears beat city rival Brien McMahon, 2-0, to finish 10-2-1 and clinch the No. 3 seed in the FCIAC Tournament.
The Eagles, the No. 2 seed, after tying Darien and defeating Trinity Catholic, knocked off Wilton on penalty kick in a quarterfinal playoff game.
The Rams, who needed a win over Fairfield Ludlowe to qualify for the playoffs, as the No. 8 seed eliminated No. 1 Norwalk, 2-1, for the second year in a row.
The Wreckers scored five touchdowns in just over 13 minutes to overcome a 17-7 deficit and roll to a 42-23 win over Darien in a battle of unbeaten teams.

I feel bad for them – though Danbury and New Canaan were also affected. Let’s see what they do in the Opens. I can’t set precedent looking back unfortunately. I’m going to go with all the FCIAC champions this week. One of those freak things.
Dave – I 100% agree with you. The damage in the town is extensive and only a very few people have power. I really believe that the Ridgefield Girls Cross Country Team should be recognized for FCIAC and State titles in the same week, both in dominating fashion. Can the team be reconsidered for next week?
Based on Ridgefield’s past voting patterns, I’m guessing the storm damage has kept their votes down, along with some other teams’. Not too often teams win league and state titles in the same week.
RIDGEFIELD GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY HAS GOT TO BE THE FCIAC TEAM OF THE WEEK! Let me get this straight…we’re having a hard time deciding between several teams that did little more than advance in the early rounds of the FCIAC tournament, or beat a key rival in regular season play, when we have a team that won both the FCIAC tournament and the State Class LL tournament over this past week, both in convincing fashion??!! This is the Ridgefield Girls Cross Country team. Let’s look at the facts…after the FCIAC championship race, the official scorer notified the Ridgefield squad that they had won the 18-team race by a large margin. A few minutes later, this scorer realized that he had forgotten to score Ridgefield’s lead runner! A deeper look reveals that Ridgefield would have won the FCIAC race if their first three runners had decided to watch the race instead, and if the team ran with their 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th runners! That’s incredible depth…not to mention that they saved some of their top runners for the FCIAC JV race, where they took the top 4 spots with no one else in sight. Ridgefield then went on 5 days later to win the State Class LL Championship race, where they beat Glastonbury by a wide margin in the State Class LL tournament. Glastonbury is a perennial powerhouse in girls cross country, having placed second overall in the New England Championships last year. And how about the fact that the top 5 Ridgefield runners are all underclassmen? Come on…let’s recognize the ONLY team that garnered both conference and state accolades this past week!!
I’m sure that every team is deserving of this, but Saturday’s football game was one of the best in Staples’ history. The score was 17-7 at the half and it had just started snowing but when they came out of the lockerroom after halftime most of them had taken off their sleeves.. In the first half, it looked like Staples had no chance and they completely turned the game around, scoring 5 touchdowns in under 13 minutes. The guys on the sidelines had piles of snow on their shoulder pads. If any team deserves to win this week, it’s Staples Football. I’ll never forget that football game for the rest of my life.
The only team that deserves to be FCIAC team of the week is the girls cross country team! Their sport is the other sports’ punishment. They go through more grueling pain than any other sport in the fciac and their reign of victories deserves to be applauded. I, buddy the elf, eat sleep and breathe Ridgefield gxc. I am their number fan. I love the snow and their victory yesterday at state class is phenomenal. If they do not win fciac team of the week I will resign from making toys this year. Show some respect for the best girls in Fairfield county. Vote. For. Them. That is all.
RIDGEFIELD GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY DESERVES TO BE FCIAC TEAM OF THE WEEK! After a nearly undefeated season, an FCIAC championship title, and running their way through a blizzard to win the State Class LL championship, give them the respect they deserve!
Hopefully voters from all over the area will recognize the Staples football team’s accomplishment of knocking off a Top 10 ranked, undefeated, defending FCIAC champion in a sport where a single loss often eliminates you from even competing for the championship. Even better, Staples pulled it off in dramatic fashion: trailing by 10 at the half and then erupting for 28 unanswered third quarter points in front of a raucous homecoming crowd and the glare of MSG Varsity’s cameras… in near blizzard conditions.
staples football legooo
Lets try to stay on point here with regard to the Team of the Week vote.
That is a dispicable job by Greenwich not showing up to play ….horrendous
I believe the Greenwich Athletic Department should get Team of the Week for postponing their football game against Westhill due to snow, especially when both teams and the officials were already at the field, ready to play. Darien and Staples were able to play, as were Trinity and Bassick, along with hundreds of other teams around the country. Hats off to breaking the dreams of many.
