Rolling a 7: Vote for the Overtime FCIAC Team of the Week

This week’s Overtime FCIAC Team of the Week menu has a very wide variety, with a heavy dose of soccer.

Your choices: the Ridgefield girls cross country, Greenwich football, Norwalk field hockey, Staples boys soccer, Wilton boys soccer, Westhill girls soccer and Trumbull girls soccer teams.

The winner will get T-shirts with our new logo courtesy of BlueStreak Sports Training, Garden Catering, the Stamford Advocate, Karl Chevrolet and Innovative Health and Rehabilitation.

The Tigers, enjoying a sensational postseason, came up with their biggest accomplishment: the State Open championship.

The Cardinals are returning to the FCIAC final for the first time since 2007 following a 17-7 win over Danbury.

The Bears, on Katie Schmidt’s goal, started the state tournament with a thrilling 1-0 win over Fairfield Warde in triple overtime.

The Wreckers rebounded from an FCIAC final loss with a 1-0 overtime win over Manchester on Max Hoberman’s goal in their state opener.

The Warriors erupted for five second-half goals and routed New London, 7-0, in their state tournament opening game.

The Vikings, looking to reach the state final for the third straight year, shut out Danbury, 2-0, and Masuk, 1-0.

The 18th-seeded Eagles edged NFA on penalty kicks, then stunned No. 2 South Windsor, 1-0, to reach the quarterfinals.

The voting is open until noon on Wednesday. So vote below and check back to find out who is this week’s Overtime FCIAC Team of the Week.

  4. I vote for the XC Ridgefield girls who won state and did well at New England’s this weekend

  5. Let me get this straight. One team on the list won the FCIAC title, LL state championship, and state open championship, and everyone else on the list won just an early-round playoff game? Why are people voting for anyone other than the Ridgefield girl’s cross country team?

    Comment by State Open Champs — November 13th, 2011 @ 3:16 pm

  6. It’s really no contest. The Ridgefield Girls XC team has brought honor not only on the town of Ridgefield but on the entire state of Connecticut.

  7. WHY IS NORWALK FIELD HOCKEY WINNING? I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT 1000 PEOPLE LOVE FIELD HOCKEY THAT MUCH. THEY MUST BE CHEATING. I VOTE FOR RIDGEFIELD GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM.

  8. I think it is possible to offer support for a team without criticizing an entire sport.

  14. I agree Dave, it’s about high school spirit. I’m sure all the teams are worthy of this win but I too am a NHS fan and those Lady Bears are fighting for the state title! Go Norwalk Girls Field Hockey!

    Comment by Lisa — November 13th, 2011 @ 8:21 pm

  15. This was all started to recognize the accomplishments of FCIAC athletes in ALL sports from ALL schools and to have some fun in the process. And judging by the voting so far, people seem to be having fun.

    Comment by Dave Ruden — November 13th, 2011 @ 8:24 pm

  16. NORWALK HIGH GIRLS FIELD HOCKEY, they work hard for the wins

    Comment by cynthia — November 13th, 2011 @ 9:16 pm

  17. Westhill girls soccer

    Comment by Rafael Busto — November 14th, 2011 @ 7:17 am

  18. If ‘cross country’ had seen the game, he too would have most likely voted for NHS Field Hockey. An awsome game played by both NHS and Fairfield Warde. To watch the players on both sides, nearly exhausted, continue to give all they had to give near the end of the THIRD OT was amazing. They certainly brought the game to the next level. Hats off to both teams.

    Comment by Jeff — November 14th, 2011 @ 8:54 am

  19. Field Hockey is a team sport, and is enjoyed by many more than 1000. The Lady Bears and Fairfield Warde, literally gave us a game for the ages. Hats off to both teams. If I could please remind Open State Champs that its a vote for OVERTIME TEAM OF THE WEEK, that NHS Field Hockey won in TRIPLE OVERTIME. These girls are playing hard and fighting hard. It’s more than a “first round” state game. It’s more than a state championship. It’s a team that has worked extremely hard, and played extremely hard and call each other family. As for “Open State Champs” and “Cross Country” do you really have to be so mean? If our girls weren’t on this ballot, they would vote for one of you, I guess we do it different in NORWALK. I’m thinking there are way more than 1000 Field Hockey fans out there…

    Comment by Janine — November 14th, 2011 @ 11:42 am

  20. Norwalk Girls, Field Hockey. It should be a slam dunk!!!

    Comment by Jimmy Ward — November 14th, 2011 @ 11:43 am

  21. dear jeff…..seeing as feild hockey isnt an fciac champion and xc is a STATE CHAMPION, no i actually dont think “crosscountry” would have voted otherwise. field hockey does our sport for punishment. now thats not very respectable.

    Comment by trackkk — November 14th, 2011 @ 6:59 pm

  22. norwalk field hockey won again tonight vs new canaan in the second round of states, not to mention that new canaan had kicked them out of fciacs. this is an even more reason to vote for them. GO LADY BEARS!

    Comment by annie — November 14th, 2011 @ 7:40 pm

  23. Except the vote is based on last week. Not that Norwalk is not worthy!

    Comment by Dave Ruden — November 14th, 2011 @ 7:42 pm

  24. The more posts there are about field hockey and other sports being inferior to “xc”, the more I want cross country to lose this poll. Honestly, stop saying that other sports aren’t legitimate. It’s very immature and all around bad sportsmanship. Every team on here has worked hard and deserves to win this, don’t try to win the poll with the logic that “other teams do cross country for punishment”. You sound about fourteen years old…

    Comment by JustSaying — November 14th, 2011 @ 7:55 pm

  25. There is another reason for the Norwalk Field Hockey Girls to be on the top of the list. THEY WON TONIGHT TO NEW CANAAN!!!!! WELL DONE

    Comment by Marcela — November 14th, 2011 @ 8:42 pm

  26. Whooo Hoo NHS Lady Bears! They have fought the fight for the over time win in the game against Fairfield and they are still going strong! Go Katie, Go Kristina! Go Mia! Go Thenya! Go Victoria! Go Sarah! Go Carrie! Get it Shannon! GO Bears!

    Comment by Lisa O — November 14th, 2011 @ 9:28 pm

  27. I respect the Norwalk Field Hockey team for a great game, winning in the third overtime. However, I do not appreciate how specific fans of the NHS team are playing down the accomplishments of the Ridgefield Girls Cross Country team. Besides the fact that you are horribly rude, I am still perplexed about the narcissistic behavior portrayed by these fans. With the quotation marks around cross country what are you implying? If you think cross country is not acceptable to win this award I would like you to go out and run a 5k in sub 20 minutes, up and down hills, and describe to me how you feel. Let’s honor the team who has won a championship. We can honor the NHS field hockey team next week if they bring home the championship…By the way someone is taking the term OVERTIME TEAM OF THE WEEK a little too literally…

    Comment by Cinderella — November 14th, 2011 @ 9:38 pm

  28. @Cinderella, “cross country” was referring to the specific person who had made a previous comment. I don’t see one comment on here by an NHS supporter that is downplaying Ridgefield’s accomplishments in any way. Everyone here should clearly understand that if your team’s name is listed in this poll, they deserve to be there. With that said, you should be very proud that your team won a State Open championship, because all of us here recognize that as quite a large accomplishment. However, most of those voting for Norwalk are doing so because of the exceptionally impressive transition of play from last year to now. Just because we haven’t won a state championship does not mean that Norwalk is not worthy. Congrats to those cross country girls; but even more so to NHS field hockey…they certainly have taken (and are continuing to take) the FCIAC by storm…GO LADY BEARS!!!

    Comment by Ryan — November 14th, 2011 @ 10:07 pm

  29. to Ryan- I totally agree. Cinderella is obviously happy about the accomplishment of his of the xc team.. congrats to State champs. But what are you saying, if you didn’t win championship, you don’t deserve “overtime of the week”. If he would of watched those NHS vs. Fairfield girls on the team, running up and down the field as hard as they could during the whole game in freezing cold last Friday night windy weather with skirts & tank tops on, playing their hearts out. NOt to mention the 3 overtimes where they take take out 4 players on each team and 7 players play their heart out 6 running up & down the field & the 7th is the goalie) trying to take and keep possession of the ball & score, literly exhausted, but not quiting to win that game, the outlook might be alittle different. All sports are great and played with heart to win. Don’t knock down a team because they didn’t win championships. NHS only had 2 loses all season and the lost by one goal. They had an amazing record too.

    Comment by John — November 14th, 2011 @ 10:39 pm

  30. Janine and others- Please don’t generalize what the entire town of Ridgefield is like based on two comments from people who are simply trying to be supportive of a team who had an overall fantastic season. The Ridgefield Girl’s Cross Country team works extremely hard every day and we consider our team to be a family as well. What these people are pointing out is that the cross country team has put in an impressive amount of effort, it’s not every day that a team wins the honor of being the best in the state. That win came with hard work and determination. Please give cross country and Ridgefield the respect they deserve, just like I know the majority of people in Ridgefield give to Norwalk and their teams there.

    Comment by anon — November 14th, 2011 @ 11:14 pm

  31. Ryan and John, Thank you for clearing that up. If the statement made by ‘Cinderella’ is in reference to my ‘cross country’ comments (No. 18), you are correct. The reference is to the person writing the comment: ‘he’, not the Ridgefield team. In addition, after reading the comments above, it seems that the ‘rude’ comments are mainly posted by those hiding behind ‘anonymous’ names, not those who identify themselves. And Trackkk, what exactly does a XC team do for punishment?

    Comment by Jeff — November 15th, 2011 @ 8:05 am

  32. anon- I GENERALIZED how the girls of NORWALK FH behave, not the town of RIDGEFIELD. If you take insult to this I apologize, but please refer to my original posted comment.

    Comment by Janine — November 15th, 2011 @ 9:43 am

  33. Cinderella- could you please point out post number(s) of any member of the NHS supporters that are being rude? If we did NOT put quotations around names, then YOU might take it literal. You sure jumped to conclusions, as I do not see a single comment made towards any member of the NHS community about any other teams validity.

    Comment by Janine — November 15th, 2011 @ 9:52 am

  34. Wow! I’m an NHS parent without a child on the FH team and a former player myself. I was asked to vote for NHS and I have. Most of these comments were generated because someone thought the voting is rigged. All this uproar for a plaque and some t-shirts???
Let’s get back to the basics. Every team nominated deserves to win. They’ve won BIG games, and in Ridgefield’s case, a championship. Players, enjoy the moment, you’ve worked hard for it. The memories will last you a lifetime….the t-shirt will not.

    Comment by Janine13 — November 15th, 2011 @ 1:03 pm

  35. VOTE FOR RHS GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY :)

we are the STATE CHAMPIONS :) (and FCIAC champions)

    Comment by XC TRACK — November 15th, 2011 @ 6:06 pm

  36. All of these comments aside, the Ridgefield Girls are the best cross country team in the ENTIRE state of Connecticut…they are the best xc team in the FCIAC, they are the best in Class LL, and they are the best out of every team in the ENTIRE state. That is a HUGE accomplishment and many people here don’t seem to understand that. They took what was just predicted to be a re-building year and turned it in to a history-making season. FCIAC team of the week or not, these girls have been working like crazy for months to get to where they are. They ran their state class meet during that BLIZZARD 2 weeks ago and they still managed to win (Try running up those mountainous hills at Wickhem park at 6 minute mile pace while its snowing). They are out there every day running grueling hill repeats, long runs, and fast track workouts that most people wouldn’t be able to get through. They push themselves to the point of throwing up, passing out, and severe discomfort just to win and do their school, town, and state proud. They represented our entire state at the New England championships this weekend and we should all be proud of them. Every team here obviously has done something great to even be on the voting…but do not overlook the sport of cross country and the Ridgefield girls who have really done something special this season.

It’s more than a “first round” state game. It’s more than a state championship.” yeah ok, a championship win and being the best in state is nothing compared to an overtime win. WHAT?!!! youre crazy!!! when fhock wins the championship then ill vote. but a team that has won FCIACS, STATE LL STATE OPEN AND STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS. is extremely deserving over youre one game win. thats the way the cookie crumbles.

    Comment by trackkk — November 15th, 2011 @ 7:25 pm

  41. Ridgefield Girls! So proud of the excellent season you all have accomplished. Make sure to keep these comments in support of your team, not trying to put down the other teams that have worked equally hard. Keep it classy girlfriends!

    Comment by Jane — November 15th, 2011 @ 7:44 pm

  42. trackkk- I agree with the way the cookie crumbles. 100% KUDOS to Wilton Boys Soccor……….As for Ridgefield representing us as a state, Thank You. If this is commentary primarily about running up and down hills at a steady pace, then I’d like to get the point in that even though the field hockey team does not run up hills, they did SPRINT for aprox. 1hr. 28mins in last Fridays game. Not only did they sprint for that length of time, they did it while carrying sticks and wearing equipment. I think that their sport has been highly underrated in this blog, and their athleticism has been critisized. All the teams on this list deserve to be here without mean comments being made.
Wilton Boys Soccor, you have been upstanding.

    Comment by Janine — November 16th, 2011 @ 8:40 am

  43. *Soccer*

  45. As this vote comes to an end, I’m going to have the last word and not post any more comments. Hopefully everyone can take a step back, realize this is a blog award and not an Oscar, that it is meant to recognize athletes’ accomplishments in a wide variety of sports and have a little fun in the process. The seven teams here are deserving finalists and some of them don’t usually get a lot of publicity. Hopefully more people now know about them. Congratulations on the success everyone here has had so far, and best wishes to those teams still competing.

  46. I thought the poll closed at noon it is 11:04 and the poll says closed? I know there are many people in our buliding looking to still vote and this does not follow the guide lines posted on the website.

  47. I’m sorry – this happened last week too. Apparently the program for the vote forgot about Daylight Savings Time. I opened the poll back up until 12:30. My apologies.
