Whitten stepping down as New Canaan lacrosse coach

Alex Whitten, who has been the boys lacrosse coach at New Canaan High School for five years, informed his players Wednesday afternoon that he is stepping down from his position.

Whitten, who led the Rams to the FCIAC title a year ago, and to three state and two conference finals, said he will be moving after Thanksgiving to become the coach at Western Albemarle High School, which is located outside of Charlottesville, Virg.

“Lacrosse has been a staple of my life for the last 38 years and really this is a move for my family, to a new area, a new region, where there is a lot of progression in the sport,” Whitten said. “They are creating a new lacrosse program down there. It’s going to be a huge challenge.”

Our reporter Jon Chik is meeting with Whitten and there will be a complete story in Thursday’s Stamford Advocate.
