During the last two weeks, there were several postseason honors for the members of both the Westhill and Stamford High School softball teams.

Stamford shortstop Krista Robustelli and Westhill centerfielder Kate Brainard were voted to the All-State team. And Stamford centerfielder Caire Kaptinski and Westhill catcher Brittany Bautista were selected to the All-State Academic team.

Last week, the North Stamford Exchange Club also held its annual dinner in which it gives out the Mary Kay Smith trophy, awarded to the Stamford city softball champion.

This year’s winner was Westhill. The trophy is named after the late Trinity Catholic softball coach, who started the program at the school.

  1. New Canaan Historian says:

New Canaan is a “football town?” That’s a bit of a stretch.
Are you familiar with any of these lacrosse players?

Darren Lawlor: Syracuse Captain for National Championship team
Boyd Harden: UNC 1st Team All American Defenseman
Andy Towers: 2X 1st Team All American at Brown, arguably greatest CT Lacrosse player ever! Currently head coach at Dartmouth
Mike Murphy: DUKE Captain, currently head coach at UPENN
Dave Curry: UVA 1st Team All American, Team USA Member 1998

Do I need to keep going?

Syrcacuse, UNC, Brown, Duke, UVA…how many NCHS football players even played on D1 teams like these, let alone were captains/NCAA 1st team All-Americans?

The “Marinelli Way”? You must mean the “Howard Benedict Way”

Benedict founded the NC Lacrosse Association out of his own back pocket in 1979 (years before Marinelli had even come to New Canaan). HE set the precedent of building a strong youth program = strong H.S program. Other sports have copied him.

Not to mention the fact that Howard held the first sports camp in New Canaan http://select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F20A11FC385410728DDDA80B94D0405B8084F1D3
The article talks about how New Canaan is special in having Division 1 coaches attend their camps, “But when pressed about the secret of luring these coaches, townspeople shrugged their shoulders and said, “Howard Benedict.” The lacrosse coach simply calls a lot of coaches and manages to cajole them into taking time out of their busy summer schedules.”
