Video Spotlight: The Mike Rivas Touchdown Show

It was an old-fashioned shootout at St. Joseph High School today, with the Cadets and Trinity Catholic combining for 15 touchdowns, including six in a wild fourth quarter.

Though St. Joseph came away with the 55-50 win, Mike Rivas had an incredible day for the Crusaders, running for 97 yards and four touchdowns.

If you missed the game — or turned your head and missed a score — here are two of Rivas’ highlights. The first is a hurdling 5-yard run that brought the Crusaders to within 21-20, the second a 7-yard touchdown run followed by a two-point conversion that tied the game at 28-28.

Vote For The Overtime Team Of The Week: Trumbull, St. Joseph Or Warren Harding?

The voting is now open to crown the Overtime High School Football Team of the Week, sponsored by BlueStreak Sports Training, Garden Catering and The Stamford Advocate.

The finalists include two teams from the same town and one that won for the first time in conference play in nearly four years.

This week’s contenders are Trumbull, which toppled Bridgeport Central in a battle of unbeaten teams, 34-12; St. Joseph, which held on for a wild 55-50 shootout win over Trinity Catholic; and Warren Harding, which defeated Fairfield Ludlowe, 12-6, for its first win since Nov. 20, 2008, and first in the FCIAC since Nov. 11, 2006, against Bassick.

The winning team, thanks to BlueStreak and Garden Catering, will receive a trophy and 60 T-Shirts with the award logo on the front in the primary color of the school.

The voting is open until noon on Wednesday and will count for 50 percent. The other half will come from the decision of a committee made up of Sean Patrick Bowley, the online sports producer for Hearst Connecticut Newspapers, Pat Pickens, the sports editor of the Fairfield Citizen-News, and Tim Parry, who runs the FCIAC Football Blog.

If the decision of the voters and the majority of the committee differs, the tie will be settled by The Advocate sports department.

So vote below and check back to find out who is the Overtime Football Team of the Week.

Darien Wins Overtime Team Of The Week Award

For the first time, the Overtime Team of the Week award came down to a tiebreaker, but Darien’s 13-10 win over St. Joseph has earned it the honor. Norwalk and Wilton were the first two winners.

The award is sponsored by BlueStreak Sports Training, Garden Catering and The Stamford Advocate.

The Blue Wave will receive a plaque and 60 T-shirts in school colors.

Darien received 511 of the 936 votes cast, or 55 percent, to easily outdistance Staples (295) and Trumbull (130), the other finalists. The voting counts 50 percent.

Staples, by a majority vote of 2-1, was the choice of the selection panel, which consists of Sean Patrick Bowley, the online sports producer for Hearst Connecticut Newspapers; Pat Pickens, the sports editor of the Fairfield Citizen-News; and Tim Parry, who runs the FCIAC Football Blog. That accounts for the other 50 percent.

Since the committee was not unanimous, and Darien won the vote decisively, the Advocate sports department settled the tie in the Blue Wave’s favor.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote. The feedback for the award has been most encouraging.

Three more finalists will be selected after this weekend’s game and the voting will begin for our second winner on Sunday, so check back.

Catch WWPT’s New FCIAC Football Pregame Show Tomorrow

When I was a student at Staples High School, one of the greatest sources of pride was WWPT, the student-run radio station. Two of my closest friends had their own shows and played music we shared and talked about throughout the day. And it was always a source to listen to Staples sporting events if you could not stay after school.

Many years later, not much has changed. If anything, WWPT, located at 90.3 on your FM dial, has only gotten better.

The station last year won John Drury National High School Radio Awards in four categories and was nominated in nine this year, including Best Sports Play-By-Play, Best Sportscast and Best Sportstalk Program.

Now, the play-by-play team of Eric Gallanty and DJ Sixsmith is upping the ante. Tomorrow, prior to the big game between Staples and Ridgefield, Gallanty and Sixsmith will be hosting a new pregame show, called FCIAC Football Weekly, at 3 p.m. The duo describe it as the high school radio version of ESPN’s College GameDay. They will be broadcasting live from Ridgefield’s Tiger Hollow, and the show will include interviews with Wreckers coach Marce Petroccio and Ridgefield’s star lineman, Tommy Jordan.

Of course you can listen to the game later at night.

So if you can’t make it to the first real big game of the FCIAC season, tune in tomorrow at 90.3 or click here.
