Jenn gets glossed at Benefit, as pal LJ Wilks smiles her approval.
A glowing Jennifer Schlegelmilch snuck in a little pampering at the Benefit boutique, where a bevy of beauties joined her in celebrating the pending arrival of her third baby boy. Bonding over lash tints, eyebrow shaping and smoky shadow lessons, the ladies took a few minutes of “me” time–punctuated by the occasional splash of champagne–and enjoyed having the place to themselves. Benefit was just the first stop in the revelry, after all–the night was still young…
I spied Marci Foley, 13, while doing some window shopping with her mom near Claire’s boutique, and was struck by Marci’s relaxed California vibe. With her loose blonde locks, kicked back attitude, and burnished gold uggs, she could just as easily have been sighted strolling down the beach boardwalk in Santa Cruz. Forget about the snow plow, dude–I’ll take a surfboard.

Sales + sunshine = smiles for Chiquita Stephenson.
Westport resident Chiquita Stephenson’s style and confidence sparkled at me near the check-out counter at the Loft. Not only is she one savvy shopper (Chiquita saved more than she spent on her downtown spree) but she is also a mother of four, grandmother, recently lost 35 pounds and is a survivor of heart disease. Chiquita has undergone eight heart surgeries and is now an outspoken activist for the American Heart Association. What’s her secret? “Eat healthy, stay away from stress and appreciate the quiet and peacefulness of what we have at home.” That, dear heart, is an answer to admire…

Jeff Shippee and the "Uniquely From Excess" 13" Hoptu Laptop Sleeve $32.
Patagonia recently called my name with its 30% off sale–one new pair of snow pants later found me chatting with affable salesman Jeff Shippee. Behind the cashier’s counter a pile of brightly colored, tricked-out laptop sleeves caught my eye, stitched from leftover wetsuit fabric by a company called Looptworks. Jeff informed me the goods are created through “up-cycling”–like re-cycling, only better–using remnants and short ends of scuba fabric which have been designated for incinerators and land fills in China. The one way shipping back to the states shrinks the carbon footprint for the cases, so I can feel great about shopping, spending and saving the environment. Leftovers never looked so good.
Yes we Cannes! Brigitte Bardot in France, on a nice, clean beach.
Avery Wallace, a ninth grader at Staples, doesn’t like to stand out from the crowd. However, her fur-trimmed orange swing coat suggested otherwise, as she and a friend took a casual walk downtown last weekend. When everyone else is wrapped up in winter, why not invite a little fresh-squeezed color into your fashion? It’s a quick way to get noticed without saying a word…

I spied Pop/Rock band Brookline Drive as they ambled toward Toquet Hall last Friday night. Their mixture of swagger and shades made them stand out from the pre-dinner shopping crowd. “We’ve played here once before–Westport is pretty high fashion,” frontman Ben Lemieux mused from behind his black Ray Bans. Though their stage style is reminiscent of The Outsiders, circa 1950, this band of boys is definitely “In” and au courant–they went on to perform an energetic set for a full house.

I made the terrible mistake of not wearing sunscreen my first time skiing because I thought I could get a tan on the bunny slopes. That was sixth grade, and I have been paying for my goofy idea ever since, as I probably aged myself a good 5 years on that single trip.
I have since mended my ways, and recently found a fabulous sunscreen at CVS–La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios SPF 60. It’s made in France and has a laundry list of beneficial qualities–from broad spectrum coverage to anti-oxidants that protect my skin at a cellular level. The matte, lightweight formula slips effortlessly under makeup and the smooth texture feels like something my lovely dermatologist, Dr. Elizabeth Smith-Cohen in Fairfield, would give me.
In fact, delightful as my derm is, one or two extra drops of this in the morning means fewer visits with her laser. And that means more time posing prettily at the beach (or jumping off the ski-lift)…
I have yet to make it to Turks and Caicos in the wintertime, but nothing beats a budding Seasonal Mood Disorder moment like a bright splash of color. I was thrilled to spot Katy Fox, 30, in her loosely knotted fuchsia scarf on a recent slushy Sunday afternoon. I stopped her and her date as they picked their way down the icy sidewalk towards Patagonia. When asked how she got her youthful glow, Katy happily responded, “I don’t smoke, try to travel a lot and live life–I guess it just works!” And for those of us who simply need a little mental vacation, let’s make it a hot pink holiday.
