Patagonia recently called my name with its 30% off sale–one new pair of snow pants later found me chatting with affable salesman Jeff Shippee. Behind the cashier’s counter a pile of brightly colored, tricked-out laptop sleeves caught my eye, stitched from leftover wetsuit fabric by a company called Looptworks. Jeff informed me the goods are created through “up-cycling”–like re-cycling, only better–using remnants and short ends of scuba fabric which have been designated for incinerators and land fills in China. The one way shipping back to the states shrinks the carbon footprint for the cases, so I can feel great about shopping, spending and saving the environment. Leftovers never looked so good.
