Week 1 Fairfield football picks

For those of you who didn’t read my first column, or for those of you who don’t get the Fairfield Citizen: here you go.

Warde at Darien, Thursday, 3 p.m. I like Warde to be an improved team, but I don’t believe that Darien will be stunned as it was a year ago. The Mustangs kept the Blue Wave out of the Class MM playoffs a year ago and pay back should be order. I think Warde can keep it close, but the Wave win. Pick: Darien 28, Warde 20.

Bridgeport Central at Ludlowe, Thursday, 6 p.m. I don’t think Ludlowe will be shellacked like it was a year ago when Christon Gill singlehandedly beat the Falcons with his legs and right arm. However, I think Central is going to be good (again) and will beat Ludlowe. The Falcons will win a statement game at some point, it just won’t be in week 1 this year. Pick: Central 26, Ludlowe 14.

Daniel Hand at Fairfield Prep, Thursday 6 p.m. Prep will cause matchup problems for every team in the SCC this year. As the the spread option becomes more and more popular and with an emphasis placed on speed throughout the country, Prep has decided to go back to Wing-T. This will create problems as the Jesuits will likely be able to control the clock and run the football. I think Prep will surprise some teams this year, and Hand will be the first. Pick: Prep 14, Hand 13.

Pomperaug at Notre Dame, Thursday 7:30 p.m. Pomperaug wins. Not big, but comfortably. I know people are high on ND-Fairfield this year. The Lancers got 12 votes in the CSWA Preseason Poll, placing them in 31st place in the state. Maybe they will be better, but Pomperaug is part of the two-headed monster (with Masuk) that is the class of the SWC. Maybe next week against Weston, boys. Pick: Pomperaug 30, Notre Dame 15.

Record-to-date: 0-0.

Week 1 in the books. Ludlowe’s Ryan looked good against a surprisingly very small Central team. Game plan should have been to run the ball ( as they demonstrated they could do against their smaller opponents ) and keep Central offense off the field. That was not the case as ball control was lacking.Central’s skill players were quick and shifty as usual.I dont see Central competing as well against teams like Ridgefield, Staples or NC. Ludlowe– maybe 3 wins this season. What are thoughts moving forward for both teams?
