Football Week 2 and other leftovers

by:

I went 3-1 with my picks. The only game I got wrong was Weston’s first win over ND in more than 10 years. Who knew?

Ridgefield 45, Ludlowe 0. This result is interesting. I’m not sure whether it is an indictment of Ludlowe or proof of Ridgefield’s running prowess. It’s probably both. But either way, Ludlowe’s passing game has been anemic, and when that is the case, it becomes difficult to run.

Prep 37, Griswold 6. Congrats to Tom Shea for his first win and here’s hoping for many more. The Jesuits will have to improve on 1-4 extra point output if they’re going to win games in the SCC. Being sound in the kicking game is important, especially if Prep wants to upset some teams.

Warde 21, Prince Tech 6. I said I didn’t like this game at all, and I still don’t. But kudos to Terrell Walden and the Warde’s kickoff return team for setting the tone early. Kudos to Duncan Della Volpe for trusting his offensive line and Alex Delaney. The Mustangs get the chance to go to 2-1 this week with a win over Bassick before they Della Volpe faces off against his mentor, Lou Marinelli.

Weston 34, ND 20. The Lancers put 20 points up, but could not shake defeat from Weston. Maybe the Trojans are improved (they’re 2-0) but ND had high hopes for this year and is now 0-2. ND will look to get its first win over Barlow who has lost its first two games, 96-45 in two games. The Lancers should be able to win it.

Other stuff

Warde’s field hockey game fell 2-0 to Darien on Thursday and beat up on Trumbull after a lax first half. The Mustangs are now 4-1 and look very much in the hunt for an FCIAC playoff berth.

Ludlowe’s girls volleyball team has won three straight matches since its loss to St. Joseph. The Falcons have just lost one game in that stretch. I’ll be seeing them play Harding today, and then again Monday in an early season showdown with Greenwich.

Warde and Ludlowe boys soccer tied each other in front of a raucous crowd of at least 1,000. The game featured five yellow cards. Look for something next week on the Warde/Ludlowe rivalry. Field hockey and volleyball’s crowns will be decided next week, unless field hockey ends in a tie.

I said it in pre-season. Ludlowe is not prepared to take on 17 of the 20 teams in the FCIAC. They have some talented players and should at least compete without the 50 point rule being put to the test each week…that’s even against the very good teams. But,they look disjointed, undisciplned and not very well organized.
