Usually the Fairfield Prep boys lacrosse earns the honor of spring season’s best team in Fairfield.
That may not be the case this year, especially after the team’s most recent defeat at the hands of Greenwich.
Prep’s tennis team is 7-4, and the school’s baseball team, despite an 8-2 loss to ND-West Haven on Thursday, in a first-place tie atop the Quinnipiac Division in the SCC.
Here is my thoughts on the best spring sports teams, thus far for 2011, at each school in Fairfield.FAIRFIELD WARDE- BASEBALL. The Mustangs are 9-4, primed for an FCIAC berth, and already qualified for the state tournament. I know the girls golf team is undefeated, the tennis teams are progressing nicely, as well. I just think baseball is the best right now. Runner-up: Girls golf.
FAIRFIELD LUDLOWE- GIRLS LACROSSE. The Falcons are going through a tough stretch as a school, athletically. The boys lacrosse team could be 8-2 or better, but instead has lost three straight. Despite a loss to Staples, and likely a defeat to Darien today, I think the Falcons have the opportunity to reach the FCIAC final, at least. Runner up: Boys lacrosse.
FAIRFIELD PREP- BOYS LACROSSE. C’mon. You couldn’t really think that this would be a choice, did you? The Jesuits lax squad is 7-4, with its only in-state loss coming at Greenwich. Runner up: baseball.
ND-FAIRFIELD- BASEBALL. The Lancers have won five of seven and are just one game away from qualifying for the state playoffs. That’s more than any other team in the school can say. Runner up: Softball.
