My all-Connecticut hockey team

by:

In case you didn’t hear it, Chris Drury retired today.

Forget for a moment his incredible history for Trumbull National Little League and pitching the last Connecticut team to the Little League World Series championship. I know this is likely what he’ll be remembered forever for in this area, but Drury is known for more than that.

He was Captain Clutch. Hobey Baker winner, game-winning-goal in Stanley Cup Finals deciding game big. The author of  this clutch moment, this one too (blech) and my personal favorite.

Drury had a great career, with 255 goals, 615 points and a Stanley Cup in 2001 with the Avalanche.

But where would he fall on an all-Connecticut team?

I posted this question on Twitter, and got a few responses. Pick your all-Connecticut hockey team. Three forwards (LW, C, RW), two defensemen and a goalie.

Here’s mine.

LW- Max Pacioretty (New Canaan)

C- Craig Janney (Enfield)

RW- Drury (Trumbull)

D- Brian Leetch (Cheshire)

D- Ron Hainsey (Bolton)

G- Jonathan Quick (Milford)

What do you think? Who would be on your team?

Fairfield HS football schedules

by:

Little League season ended last week.

That means it is time to start on the Fall sports season.

Which means it’s time for everyone to start getting football mad.

Strange but true, the first Fairfield high school football scrimmage is only 13 days away, when Ludlowe scrimmages Bunnell.

Here are your regular season schedules for schools in Fairfield. Continue reading

Two Little League state champions

by:

Fairfield American Little League is state champs again.

The 12-year-olds are now one step from the Little League World Series for the second straight season, after a 13-3 win over Glastonbury on Tuesday night in Prospect.

American’s 11-year-olds also clinched the state title on Tuesday, winning 6-5 to sweep the series over Avon two games to none.

The softball team’s 12-year-0lds also were state champions, meaning Fairfield now holds a monopoly on both Little League baseball and softball in Connecticut.

That fact is not lost on the team’s head coach Kevin Flynn.

“It’s great,” he said.

Fairfield’s regional tournament starts Friday at 8:15 vs. Barre (Vt.). The Connecticut state champions will play against Maine at 8 p.m. on Saturday and New Hampshire at 5 p.m. on Sunday. Fairfield’s round robin schedule closes Tuesday at 1 p.m. against Cumberland, R.I. and that game will be televised on NESN.

Unfortunately, no one in Fairfield gets NESN, so if you are willing to bag work and trek north or east to watch the game at an establishment, it’ll be on.

I’ll also be going on WTNH with Gil Simmons on Thursday at 7:15 a.m.  at Town Hall Green to discuss Fairfield American’s success. If you care to come down and join Gil and myself, feel free to.

As always, I’ll be tweeting updates of all Fairfield American’s regional games, so follow me if you’re interested in that.

Do or die for American tonight

by:

They’ve become the cardiac kids with an offense that can light up scoreboards.

Fairfield American’s 12-year-old Little League team has staved off elimination, fought off deficits and won games no matter the circumstances.

But if they don’t win tonight, the team’s season will all be over. Continue reading
