Tentative Fairfield high school football schedules

by:

I was an in-studio guest on WGCH on “The Press Box” on Monday night.

Rob Adams– the station’s sports director– had me in to discuss my beloved New Jersey Devils and their journey to the Stanley Cup Finals. I was there for 1 hour, 40 minutes and had a blast talking hockey, baseball, state tournaments, championship merch, weddings and all sorts of other topics.

Included in those topics was Greenwich High School football’s tentative schedule.

Finding the Cards’ schedule reminded me to start searching for the Fairfield schools. They, tentatively, have been released on the CIAC site. You do, however, have to dig for them.

Conference tournament outlooks

by:

I know the FCIAC lacrosse tournaments started over the weekend, but the bulk of conference tournaments are scheduled to begin Monday.

The SCC and FCIAC are the two tournaments with teams from Fairfield in them. Most of Monday’s action has been postponed until Tuesday. Only Prep lacrosse’s quarterfinal against Amity is on as scheduled.

I’ll quickly handicap each Fairfield team’s chances in its upcoming conference tourney. And we’ll start with the SCC.

SCC Boys Lacrosse

Schedule: Quarterfinals Monday at higher seed; Semifinals Wednesday, 4/6 p.m. at Branford; Finals Friday, TBA, at Branford.

Favorite: Fairfield Prep

Contenders: Guilford, Daniel Hand

Dark Horse: Cheshire

Outlook: Prep did not lose a conference game all year, and I wouldn’t expect it to lose in the conference tournament. The Jesuits are the defending champs, and put this as one of their many goals each year. Prep’s smothered all competition– its only allowed more than 4 goals in a conference game once this year– but that semifinal matchup against Cheshire could be interesting. Still, this tournament is Prep’s to lose.

SCC Boys Tennis

Schedule: Quarterfinals Tuesday at higher seed; Semifinals Wednesday, 3:30 p.m. at Yale; Finals Thursday, 3:30 p.m. at Yale.

Favorite: Amity

Contenders: Hand, Cheshire

Dark Horse: Fairfield Prep

Outlook: Amity and Prep have met for the SCC championship in five of the tournament’s six years. The Jesuits and Spartans have taken every championship since a tournament was initiated in 2006. The teams won’t meet in the championship match this season. But it’s likely one of the two will reach the finals again. Prep’s loss at Amity on May 16 was only 4-3, so who knows if the clubs matchup in Wednesday’s semis.

But if Prep does find a way to upset the Spartans, it’ll likely spell a title for Hand. The Tigers dealt Prep two of its five conference losses, and are likely the only other club– besides Prep– who could unseat Amity.

Now onto the FCIAC:

FCIAC Softball

Schedule: Quarterfinals re-scheduled for Tuesday at higher seed; Semifinals Wednesday 3/5 p.m. at Sacred Heart; Finals Thursday, 4 p.m., at Sacred Heart.

Favorite: Westhill

Contenders: Darien, St. Joseph

Dark Horse: Ludlowe

Outlook: The Falcons are only the No. 5 seed, but don’t be fooled, they can win the whole thing. Ludlowe was No. 8 seed a year ago, and stunned Westhill on its way to the conference final, when it fell to Darien. This is a new year, but Ludlowe’s beaten both the No. 2 seed Darien and third-seeded St. Joseph. The Falcons pummeled St. Joes on April 13.

The Cadets, however, have not lost since, taking 15 consecutive in the win column entering the tournament, including their stunning 10-6 upset of Westhill on May 7. Don’t expect that to happen again. Chalk (Westhill) is the good pick.

FCIAC Boys Tennis

Schedule: 1 quarterfinal Monday (Darien at Ridgefield), 3 Tuesday at 4 p.m. at higher seeds; Semifinals Wednesday at higher seeds, 4; Finals Thursday at Wilton, 4

Favorite: Greenwich

Contenders: Staples, Ridgefield

Dark Horse: New Canaan

Outlook: Greenwich is the obvious favorite in this tournament. The Cardinals have not lost a match all year, and has only lost matches to Staples and Ridgefield. The Wreckers are likely the only team that could unseat the defending champion Cardinals. I was tempted to pick Warde as a darkhorse, but getting by Greenwich in the quarters is likely too arduous a challenge. Ludlowe has a similarly tough draw, it will play Staples Tuesday. The Wreckers beat the Falcons 6-1 in the regular season.

FCIAC Girls Tennis

Schedule: 2 quarterfinals Monday (Warde at Greenwich, Wilton at New Canaan), 2 quarterfinals Tuesday; Semifinals Wednesday at higher seeds; Finals TBA.

Favorite: Greenwich

Contenders: New Canaan, Ludlowe

Dark Horse: Staples

Outlook: Ludlowe has just two FCIAC losses this year, but both were to the clubs seeded higher than it. The Falcons should breeze through Tuesday’s quarters, but have a likely matchup at New Canaan Wednesday in the semis staring them in the face. New Canaan beat Ludlowe for the FCIAC East championship on May 11.

Note: SCC outdoor track is Monday and FCIAC outdoor track is Tuesday. SCC and FCIAC golf championships will be contested next week, so look for upcoming previews on those as well.

Banner days for Prep baseball, lax; Warde lax clinches state berth

by:

Fairfield Prep baseball head coach Rudy Mauritz waited more than a week for his team to get to the state playoffs.

The Jesuits talked about it every day during their three-game losing streak. Finally before Prep’s game Monday against ND-West Haven, Mauritz gave up his “clinching day” speech.

Apparently that, and a hot start, made all the difference.

The Jesuits dealt the New Haven Register’s No. 2 team just its second loss of 2012 as Prep beat ND-West Haven 5-3 on Monday in Fairfield.

“We’ve been sitting on seven wins for over a week,”  Mauritz said. “We didn’t bring up the subject today, and the guys were a tad looser.”

Prep’s ace Brett Young pitched five shutout innings, and sophomore Shawn Blake delivered the big blow, a first-inning, two-RBI triple in the first. The Jesuits scored three runs in the first inning, and tacked on single tallies later in the game.

“It’s easier for us to be aggressive and play our game when we’re ahead,” Mauritz said.

Prep lost three straight last week, and was bombed by Daniel Hand on Saturday. But Mauritz told me he thinks his club responded to the challenge of playing against one of the state’s best.

“Whatever the sport … when we’re playing our biggest rivals, our guys really pick up their intensity,” he said. “When we play those teams that are really good … our guys have a way of playing their best.”

Just two days removed from the biggest upset in the tri-state area in years, Prep dodged a letdown.

Prep got four goals apiece from Tim Edmonds and Matt Brophy in its 14-8 win over Greenwich Monday. The Jesuits won their fourth straight game, a stretch that included a shocking 11-10 win over Long Island powerhouse Chaminade on Saturday.

The Jesuits have beaten Greenwich two straight games — including a 10-9 win that ended the Cardinals season in 2011. The inter-conference foes, who have met four of the past six years in the Class L state tournament — including the 2007 state championship game — have developed something of a rivalry, according to Prep coach Chris Smalkais.

“We have a bit of an informal rivalry because of the playoff history we have with them,” Smalkais said. “It’s good to compete against teams who challenge you, to see how good you can be.”

Greenwich coach Scott Bulkley, who has a young team this year and is only 6-7, shared Smalkais’ sentiments.

“We try to challenge ourselves all the time,” Bulkley said. “(Prep’s) win against Chaminade proves that they’re one of the best teams in the tri-state area.”

Bulkley was proud of his club, despite its inability to possess on offense.

“We did some good things,” he said. “But we made some mistakes.”

Brophy, who has now played against Greenwich six times in his four years at Prep, understands what the Cardinals bring to the table.

“They’re always well-coached,” he said. “Bulkley knows what he’s doing over there.”

Despite Greenwich’s 6-7 record, another meeting in states is certainly possible; perhaps even in the first round.

Prep was also concerned about a letdown on the heels of that win over Chaminade that a letdown would damage its image.

Jesuits defender Conor Barr told me after the game that being the top team in the state — and unseating No. 1 Darien — certainly would not happen without a win over the Cardinals.

“We talked about how the win Saturday wouldn’t win without winning (Monday),” Barr said. “(Smalkais) said ‘if you want to be known as better than Darien you have to win today’ and I think we cemented that.”

Prep still has a big week ahead, with a showdown against FCIAC-royalty Wilton sandiwiching an SCC-game against Branford Wednesday.

Despite Prep’s win over Chaminade, I still had Darien as the top-team in my New Haven Register Poll. The Blue Wave beat Greenwich and St. Anthony’s (N.Y.). Prep was second and Ridgefield was third, after their sound beating of Brien McMahon on Saturday.

Wilton was fourth and Barlow– fresh off a dominant 11-1 win over Weston– rounded out my top-five.

Finally, some daps need to be given to Fairfield Warde.

The Mustangs beat Bunnell 14-2 on Friday night to clinch their seventh win and the program’s first trip to the state playoffs.

Warde coach Tom Cunningham reached out to me on Tuesday saying “It’s been a team effort. If you look at the scoresheets, there’ve been games where we’ve had 12 guys on the scoresheet. Everyone’s been getting involved.”
