What’s with Fairfield legion?

by:

The Fairfield summer baseball season is in full swing.

Despite two triples on Wednesday, Tim Moran and the Fairfield senior legion team are 4-12.

(Get it? Swing?)

Puns aside, it’s been a split year so far for Fairfield baseball. On the one hand, American and National Little League have outscored their opponents by a combined 24 runs in their opening games.

But there’s a long way to go before even the District 2 championship game– likely a meeting between the two rivals on July 14, and potentially 15.

Yet, on the legion side of the coin, Fairfield’s having some struggles. The senior bunch is 4-12 after an 8-3 loss to Stamford Wednesday night. The junior bunch is 6-10.

There’ll be a longer version of this story coming next week– and if you can answer the following question, please email me at ppickens@bcnnew.com– but how is Fairfield legion so bad? I spoke with general manager Sars Ford who told me the team’s history is bad, and its recent history is worse.

“We had participation issues early on,” coach Jon Servilla told me Wednesday. “We just haven’t put it all together.”

Yet, here we are in a town with four high schools– two of which are public and another, Prep, pulls kids most of its kids from Fairfield. There are dozens of fields around town, and legion– which is as American as apple pie– can’t do better than 4-12?

To quote Blues Traveler: There is something amiss.

AAU, mostly, steals Fairfield’s thunder. But if you look at both National and American’s success and, again, the high schools, you’d expect more.

Features I did about some of Fairfield’s fastest runners from Warde, Ludlowe and Prep.

If you haven’t heard, Mike Cardillo caught up with London Olympics-bound javelin thrower Craig Kinsley and Chris Elsberry reached his family.

We blew out the Fairfield Half Marathon. Here’s my race story from the Citizen, Meg Barone’s color story, Mike Lauterborn’s feature on race director Steve Lobdell, Kevin Duffy’s terrific column and the slideshow.

Little League District schedules

by:

Fairfield American is the two-time defending champion of Connecticut’s District 2.

Yet, Fairfield National has some unfinished business from last year.

National came three outs from the district championship, yet a ginormous sixth-inning lifted American and spearheaded its run to the state championship and regional semis.

We’re less than two weeks from the Little League season’s kickoff, and here are both American and National’s schedules.

All games are played at Blackham School in Bridgeport. All times are p.m., except where noted.

American
June 27, vs. Easton, 5:30
June 30, vs. Monroe, 1
July 3, vs. Redding, 5:30
July 7, vs. Trumbull American, 5:30

National
June 26, vs. Trumbull National, 5:30
June 30, vs. Westport, 10 a.m.
July 2, vs. North End, 5:30
July 6, vs. Stratford, 5:30

Four teams will advance from pool play and reach the semifinals. Semis will be double elimination. The last possible day to complete the district tournament is July 15.

Softball

Little League softball will begin June 25 too. There is just one Fairfield program, but it was New England champion last year.

Again, all times are p.m. Games will be played at Unity Park in Trumbull.

June 25, vs. Trumbull, 5:30
June 28, vs. Black Rock, 5:30
June 29, vs. Westport, 5:30
July 1, vs. Stratford, noon

The two best teams will meet in the district championship game on July 3 at 5:30 p.m.
