State votes to postpone playoffs/updated schedule

|

We finally have answers about our high school sporting events.

Here’s the official release sent from the CIAC:

As a result of the impact of Hurricane Sandy, which has left many schools still closed and caused damage and other issues across the state the CIAC has created a revised schedule for the 2012 fall tournaments. The decision came after a thorough review of the calendar, discussion with tournament directors, and communication with potential host sites.

The CIAC fall tournaments in boys and girls soccer, field hockey, and girls volleyball were originally scheduled to begin on Monday, November 5.

With the revised schedule the final day for regular season games to count will be Tuesday, November 6 with teams having the option to play games Sunday November 4 if the games are played after 12:30 p.m. With the revised schedule Tournament competition will begin on Thursday, November 8.

Championship contests for volleyball and field hockey will be played the weekend of November 16-17. Finals for boys and girls soccer will be played the weekend of November 23-24.

The State Cross Country Open, which was scheduled for Friday at Wickham Park, will be moved to Sunday (the last possible date due to the park closing on Monday and the New England Championships being scheduled for Saturday). The girls swimming diving trials and finals for Class LL and S have also been changed from their originally scheduled date of Wednesday, November 7.

The CIAC intentionally did not schedule tournament play for the three school days prior to Thanksgiving in consideration of the many events that occur in schools during that abbreviated week, to allow for rescheduling of semi-final matches if there is inclement weather, and because school fields are being used by football teams preparing for Thanksgiving games.

The CIAC Football Tournament schedule has not been altered.

This will allow the conference tournaments to be finished by Tuesday or Wednesday.

Prep’s boys soccer game semifinal, which was originally scheduled for Thursday, will now be Saturday at 10 a.m. I haven’t received word, yet, on when the SCC Finals will be.

After speaking with ND-Fairfield athletic director Rob Bleggi, it sounds like the Lancers’ game with Bethel will be played Sunday or Monday at Sacred Heart University. Bleggi said that the schedule’s being held up on SHU’s ability to confirm its field availability for Sunday. Sacred Heart is presently without power.

The FCIAC has not yet updated its schedule, but will announce its postseason schedule after a 3 p.m. conference call.

Looking at Fairfield Prep’s schedule on the CIAC site, it appears as though the Jesuits’ game with Branford will be moved from Friday to Nov. 15. Although that, obviously, has not been officially moved yet.

Hope you’re all safe and sound.
