Four teams left

by:

Two hockey teams, and one apiece in girls and boys basketball, remain alive for state championship contention.

No. 2 Notre Dame-Fairfield’s girls will meet third-seeded Haddam-Killingworth Monday at Sheehan HS in Wallingford. The Lancers 22-4– 22-2 against without the name “Lauralton”– and are one win from their first state-title game since 2007.

No. 13 Fairfield co-op hockey is the story of the winter championship season here. The co-op team has won two straight Division II tournament games against higher-seeded competition, including its 4-3 double-overtime win over Branford.

The team’s  story has been sophomore goalie Kyle Greenhunt. Greenhunt only played one regular-season game this year– and looked nervous in Fairfield’s 8-5 win over Staples-Weston-Shelton– but has been outstanding spelling injured Connor Frawley.

Fairfield is one win from its first state title since 2008. The co-op team will meet North Branford Monday– which it lost 5-2 against on Jan. 5– at 5:30 at Ingalls Rink in New Haven.

Fairfield Prep is the top seed in both Division I hockey and Class LL basketball. The basketball team will trek to Wilby to meet No. 5 East Hartford Tuesday night in Waterbury.

Three of the final four Class LL clubs hail in the SCC– with both Hillhouse and Xavier serving as Prep’s conference rival. The LL final will be this weekend at Mohegan Sun.

Last but not least, Wednesday’s Division I hockey semis will open with Prep vs. Ridgefield at 5:30 at Ingalls.

The Jesuits blitzed the Tigers 6-1 on Dec. 12 in Bridgeport. The winner will play the winner of the nightcap– ND-West Haven vs. Darien.

That final will be March 19 at Ingalls at 7 p.m.

Three hockey teams still alive…

by:

… At least for the time being.

Fairfield Prep has a Division I bye until Saturday– the Jesuits will play either Glastonbury or Hamden– and Fairfield co-op claimed an impressive 3-2 upset of Watertown-Pomperaug on Tuesday evening.

Fairfield will now venture to Branford, Ingalls Rink Friday, for the Division II quarters. Fairfield will play at New Haven’s “Yale Whale”  for the first time since 2008.

ND will trek to Simsbury, Wednesday at 7 p.m. Should the Lancers upset Simsbury, they’ll have to face ND-West Haven on Saturday.

Speaking of hockey, if you missed my full-length feature on Stone Denbok, it is here.

Denbok’s taken the state hockey world by storm. He has a 2.33 goals-against average and .921 save percentage in 16 starts, averaging 30 saves in those games.

Five years ago today…

by:

Five years ago was also Presidents’ Day.

I remember because I deemed it odd that the Fairfield Citizen would be open on a major federal holiday.

My original press pass-- which still gets used today-- was issued on Feb. 18, 2008.

I sure was naive back then.

Five years ago, Feb. 18, 2008, I started as the sports editor of the Fairfield Citizen, and I haven’t stopped since.

A lot has happened– both societally and locally– since I started. The obvious economic crisis plagued our country, the digital age and Twitter took off, Barack Obama was elected for multiple terms, etc.,

Locally, we’ve battled catastrophic hurricanes and blizzards, but the town also celebrated state and conference titles– at least one– for each of Fairfield’s four high schools.

Fairfield also holds the Little League state championship in both softball and baseball and has twice sent teams to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.

Personally, a lot has changed since I took over. But I’d like to think I’ve grown. We’ve had our spats along the way, but I still strive to bring thoughtful and fair coverage to Fairfield.

In celebration of my anniversary, I’ll be watching a Fairfield hockey

Fairfield Prep hockey will put its 16-game win streak on the line Monday against Notre Dame-Fairfield

special Monday.

Prep, fresh off its 1-0 win over Notre Dame-West Haven Saturday, will host ND-Fairfield Monday at Wonderland of Ice.

The Lancers had their eight-game win streak snapped Friday by Glastonbury but still enter as one of the state’s hottest teams. ND is also looking for redemption– the Lancers fell at home to Prep 7-2 on Dec. 20.

Over the weekend, Warde had a strong showing in both track and wrestling.

The Mustangs placed second at the Class L meet in wrestling– finishing just 3.5 points behind state champ New Milford. Charles Kane (136) and Ahmed Hourani (285) were state champions, and Warde also took second place in four weight classes.

Ludlowe finished eighth at the Class L meet.

In track, both of Warde’s 4×800 relay teams took home first-place honors at the Class L track meet Friday in New Haven.

Warde’s girls placed fourth at the event. The Mustangs’ boys squad was eighth.

Christian Alvarado placed first in the 3,200-meter run and second in the 1,600 at the Class LL meet Saturday. Alvarado was second behind Staples’ Henry Wynne by just 0.66.

Ludlowe’s girls were 19th at Class LLs, and its boys placed 23rd in Class L.

This week’s coverage:

Monday: Prep vs. ND hockey, 5

Tuesday: Prep vs. Amity, boys basketball, 7

Wednesday: ND-West Haven at ND-Fairfield hockey, 6

Impressive slate of games for Wednesday

by:

After five days without high school contests, a full slate of Fairfield athletic events returns tonight.

No disrespect to the Notre Dame girls basketball team– who played, and won on Tuesday against Brookfield– but school and games both re-started Wednesday in Fairfield.

And what a slate of games there are in Fairfield on Wednesday.

Prep boys basketball, the newly-minted No. 1 team in Connecticut, will play its first game as such when it hosts Career Magnet at 7. The Jesuits have won seven straight, including their five-point win over Hillhouse last week.

Prep’s hockey team, also No. 1 in Connecticut, will trek down county to take

Matt Beck and the Fairfield Prep boys ice hockey team will put their unbeaten record on the line in Darien on Wednesday.

on the state’s No. 3 team, Darien. The Jesuits are the state’s hottest team, having scored five or more goals in every intrastate contest it has competed.

Yet, the Blue Wave is on fire as well. Darien has lost only once– 3-0 at ND-West Haven on Jan. 5– and is 10-0-1 in its last 11, averaging nearly seven goals per game in that stretch.

I’m told Prep is the first SCC team to ever serve as the state’s top team in both boys basketball and hockey.

Are you more interested in FCIAC matchups? OK, there are a few important ones on Wednesday. Fairfield Ludlowe’s girls basketball team is clinging to its FCIAC playoff hopes, trailing No. 8 Ridgefield by two games with two to play. The Falcons trek to the Tigers Lair tonight, then will close at New Canaan Thursday.

Two wins, coupled with a Ridgefield loss Thursday, will cement the Falcons as the league tournament’s No. 8 seed.

Ludlowe’s boys basketball team also has FCIAC playoff hopes hanging in the balance. The Falcons are just one game back, in a three-way tie for ninth– no matter what the FCIAC website says.

If Ludlowe can upset the Tigers– I believe it can– it will close with games against New Canaan, Harding and Darien. The Falcons also have the tiebreakers over Bassick, Wilton and Staples. But Greenwich– thanks to its 57-42 win on Dec. 22– holds the tiebreaker over the Falcons.

Fairfield co-op hockey vies for its second straight win when it hosts Trinity Catholic at 7:15 p.m. at Wonderland of Ice. Fairfield presently sits in a three-way tie for fifth in the FCIAC standings, but it can clinch a league-tournament berth with five points– a 2-1-1 finish– in its final four games.

That, however, could change between now and the regular season’s end.

ND-Fairfield will put its seven-game win streak on the line, when it treks to South Windsor tonight.

Postponements

In case you did not hear, Fairfield Prep’s crosstown matchup with ND was moved to Monday at noon at Wonderland of Ice.

All Fairfield public school games originally scheduled for Monday were moved to Wednesday. Both Ludlowe and Warde basketball teams will play back-to-backs on Wednesday and Thursday.

ND-Fairfield’s hockey game against New Canaan was scheduled for Monday, but has been re-scheduled for Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m. ND vs. Fairfield co-op girls hockey is now Feb. 20 at 3:20 p.m.

Thomas Anania and Fairfield Warde will vie for the school's third Class L state wrestling title in five years this weekend.

The FCIAC wrestling meet was cancelled, and Danbury was declared the winner. Warde and Ludlowe will vie for the Class L title at Bristol Central Friday and Saturday.

Prep will wrestle Friday and Saturday in the LL meet, at Trumbull High School.

The state class indoor track meets, originally scheduled for this past weekend, were moved to Friday and Saturday. Class L– Ludlowe boys and Warde– will be Friday. Class LL– Prep and Ludlowe girls– will be Saturday.

Ludlowe sweeps Warde in basketball

by:

This year’s hardwood series goes to Fairfield Ludlowe.

The Falcons swept Tuesday night’s doubleheader with a pair of resounding

Ludlowe's students dressed like it was Halloween on Tuesday.

defensive efforts. Ludlowe’s girls trumped rival Warde 53-42, and in the nightcap, the Falcons smothered the Mustangs 42-30.

The games were dubbed the “Coaches vs. Cancer” games and were played in honor of the late Walter Fitzgerald. “Coach Fitz,” as he was known, died in 2010 of cancer after serving as a coach and educator in Fairfield for years.

Somehow, Ludlowe’s boys team continues to win games playing in the 40s.

The Falcons have not scored 60 points in a game this year and have only surpassed 50 four times. Yet, Ludlowe, somehow, is 6-7, and one game out of the final FCIAC playoff berth.

“I thought our defense was for real tonight,” Ludlowe coach Brian Silvestro said. “I wasn’t surprised that they had 12 at halftime … there is something to that.”

The Falcons, who are shooting just 37 percent this year and only 28 percent

Mark Malone scored a game-high 19 in Ludlowe's win over Warde on Tuesday.

from 3-point range, finally saw Mark Malone heat up offensively. The junior guard scored 12 of his 19 in the first half, nailing four 3-pointers.

“I just wanted to come out and play as hard as I can,” Malone said. “It feels really good to come out and beat Warde.”

With standout forwards Patrick Gutierrez and Connor Peterson combining for just 10 points, Malone’s shooting was a huge blessing for Ludlowe. But the Falcons’ role players also offered a huge lift.

Matthew Doyle canned two 3-pointers– getting help from some friendly rims on his first. Chad Peterson and Alex Gorusch played great defense, Gorusch even scored a key basket late in the third.

“We’ve developed a couple of them now,” Silvestro said. “They know their roles … and we don’t drop off at all when those guys come into the game.”

That troika, plus Stephen Scholz and guard Dan Santella, helped Ludlowe outrebound Warde 28-25. Silvestro singled out Santella for his effort.

“Tonight he was rebounding and did some stuff,” Silvestro said of Santella.

For Warde, the mood shifts.

The Mustangs dropped their second straight and ninth in 11 contests. Warde is now 4-10.

“They hit some big shots,” Warde coach Ryan Swaller said. “We didn’t get enough of those going our way.”

The Mustangs have just six games left and must win four of those six to reach the state tournament. With games against Trinity Catholic, Ridgefield and St. Joseph on the docket, those chances are looking bleak.

But Swaller’s doing his best to stay positive.

“I understand the road ahead,” he said. “We have two home games. It’ll be nice getting back into our gym, and hopefully the shooting will turn around on Friday.”

In the opener, Ludlowe’s Blatt sisters dominated.

Fairfield Ludlowe's Pauline Blatt scored a game-high 21 in the Falcons' win over Warde Tuesday.

Junior forward Pauline scored a game-high 21, and her sister Charlotte added 10 in the Falcons’ win.

Though the game was tied at halftime, Ludlowe used a 19-8 third quarter to pull away, which ultimately served as the difference.

“I think it was our determination,” Ludlowe coach Sarah Huntington said. “We adjusted in the second half.”

Credit Huntington too. Just four days removed from a blowout loss at home to Stamford, the Falcons gained their ninth win, staying within a game of the final FCIAC tournament berth.

“We learned something from Stamford,” Huntington said. “We came off that loss, and we said ‘what was the difference between Stamford and us? Their toughness’ and that was one of the things we stressed.”

Warde’s Dave Danko thought summarizing the girls game was easy.

“We got outplayed,” he said. “We were getting outworked on the boards.”

He referred to Pauline Blatt as “a difference-maker” when we spoke Friday, and sure enough he was right.

“I knew that she was the difference,” Danko said. “She’s playing like a center.”

The Mustangs now are three games out of an FCIAC berth and probably

Warde's student section pulled out some heads on sticks on Tuesday.

must win out to reach the tournament. But with games against Ridgefield, Darien, and Trinity Catholic– three teams tied for the FCIAC’s 6-8 seeds– Warde still holds its own destiny.

Give both student sections credit for showing up last night.

Ludlowe’s was dressed up as though Halloween was imminent. Warde’s sported black shirts and blowup baby heads on sticks.

What great fun.

Ludlowe, Warde set to face off

by:

Tuesday is, arguably, the biggest date on the Fairfield high school athletic calendar.

Fairfield is a basketball town. There’s no two ways about it. And Tuesday night pits Fairfield’s two public high school teams against each other.

Warde will trek across town to take on Ludlowe. The girls will serve as Tuesday’s appetizer at 6 p.m.; the boys will be the main dish, starting just before 8 p.m.

In an interesting twist of fate, each team enters Tuesday coming off a loss. Ludlowe was swept by Stamford Friday. The Falcons girls were smacked, falling behind 35-6 in their 53-31 loss to the Black Knights Friday.

Stamford’s boys squad gained its second league win, 44-41, over Ludlowe in overtime

“It was very disappointing,” Ludlowe coach Brian Silvestro said. “We had kids so upset by that game; they were more upset than I’ve seen these kids in a while.”

Warde had its bye Friday, but the Mustangs are coming off tandem losses to Westhill last Tuesday. The girls fell by 19 in Stamford to the Vikings.

The boys actually played at Ludlowe against the Vikings– thanks to a roof leak at Warde.

The Falcons and Mustangs boys have already met this season. Ludlowe pummeled Warde, 55-39, on Dec. 28 in the Prep Holiday Classic consolation game. Connor Peterson and Patrick Gutierrez combined for 33 of Ludlowe’s 55.

On the girls side, Warde can clinch a state tournament berth with a win over

Kaitlin McKenna will look to guide Warde to a third straight win over crosstown rival Ludlowe

Ludlowe. The Mustangs are 7-7, and have lost four of five after a 6-3 start– though all four of those losses came to teams in the FCIAC’s top five.

Ludlowe’s girls are just a game out of the eighth FCIAC playoff berth and can boost their chances with a win.

Sarah Huntington, in her third year of head coaching at Ludlowe, has never beaten Warde in three tries. The Mustangs trumped Ludlowe 46-43 a year ago.

“It’s going to be an excellent matchup,” Huntington said Friday. “It’s a great crosstown rivalry … it’s going to be a great game.”

Huntington has ample respect for Warde coach Dave Danko and realizes that you can toss the record books out when these teams square off.

“It’s Warde/Ludlowe,” she said. “It doesn’t even matter the record. It’s always a good game.”

Danko has requested that his team take pride in itself before it takes the floor.

“It’s a rivalry game,” he said. “We have to look at the uniform and play for our school and play with pride.

“I think good things will happen.”

In the nightcap, both squads are just interested in consistency.

The Falcons have lost three straight, averaging just 44 points per game. If you look at Ludlowe’s last six games– of which the Falcons have lost four– it is averaging just 41.1 points per game. Ludlowe is shooting just 37 percent from the field this year.

“We just haven’t executed,” Silvestro said.

Warde’s lost three of four and currently sits at 3-9. The Mustangs must finish 5-3 to qualify for the state tournament– a feat that will be near-impossible if they can’t beat their crosstown rival.

“We can’t give away any games with some of the teams we have left,” Warde coach Ryan Swaller said Monday. “We’re going to have to play at a high level and play at a more consistent level.”

But if the Mustangs do beat Ludlowe, they’ll gain some confidence entering a stretch of winnable games. Warde plays home against Staples Friday, New Canaan on Feb. 5, then Darien on Feb. 12.

“A win (against Ludlowe) could catapult us,” Swaller said.

Silvestro admitted he’s expecting a different Warde team on Tuesday.

“I think they’ll be as prepared, if not better prepared for us,” he said. “I think they’re a pretty hungry basketball team.”

I’ll be at both games, offering updates on Twitter.
