President Hogan leaves UConn

The Hartford Courant just reported that President Hogan has resigned from UConn to take a position as president of the University of Illinois.

An article in the University of Illinois student paper, Daily Illini, discusses the amount of time that Hogan has spent at UConn:

Corey Schmitt, one of the student trustees at the University of Connecticut, said Hogan’s relatively short stint as president was one of the reasons he was surprised when he found out Hogan was leaving the university.

“No one really knew, it came as a big shock to all of us,” he said, referring to members of the university’s board of trustees. “He’s been here for two and a half years, so that’s one of the main reasons we were kind of caught off-guard,”

Comments from Facebook and Twitter comically reference the president’s $4000 carpet, which was at the center much controversy this year, and cardboard cut outs of Hogan.

“What will we ever do with the $3000 worth of Hogan cardboard cut outs?” reads one of many tweets under the hashtag #UConn.

To my readers, what do you think of Hogan’s departure? How would you rate his performance over his years as president? Who do you think might be the next university president?

Pre Spring Weekend MP3 Featues UConn Celebs

I don’t remember exactly where I found it but some UConn celebs — members of USG and the media — were featured in an mp3 about Spring Weekend.

The roster includes UCTV star Joey Homza, USG President Thomas Haggerty “T. Hagz”, Student Body V.P. Lia Albini and Krizman. It was produced by “DJ Rico.”

Here’s the video. What do you think about it? American Idol material?

USG Giving Out Free Swag

The USG is giving out free t-shirts and headbands on Fairfield Way right now, if you can prove that you voted in their online elections.

My best advice is to go into the library and print our your proof of voting as the line to the CUE computer lab is incredibly long. I also wonder if they might run out of promotional materials. I’m guessing that supplies are limited and the sooner you can get there, the better.

You can vote at usg.uconn.edu, but don’t just vote for the free items! In the words of my friend Sam Tracy, a CLAS senator candidate who recently published an opinion piece in the Daily Campus,

Most importantly, USG receives student funding. Just like citizens of any kind of government, UConn students essentially pay taxes to go to school in the form of student fees. Because of this, every student has a stake in USG.

Rocking The Vote at UConn: Candidates Vie For Office, Advertisments Galore in The Dorms

The canvassers are out, sliding little pieces of paper advertising candidates under the door. The ballots are being collected (electronically). It’s Undergraduate Student Government Elections at UConn.

As reported in The Daily Campus, the parties running for office are: Haggerty-Richards (incumbents), Burrill-Thompson and Chery-Feshazion.

I’m not the type of person to ask who you are voting for, but which candidates strike you as the most compelling, interesting, open, honest?

For those who haven’t found brightly colored leaflets under their door, you can vote (if you are a UConn student, of course) by visiting https://elections.usg.uconn.edu.
