On Thursday March 25, 2010, the Milford Republican Town Committee conducted a straw poll that gave members the opportunity to show their support for various candidates for Governor and Senator. Tom Foley was the overwhelming choice for Governor but there was a split decision on the Senate candidates.

Tom Foley made a career out of turning around under-performing and failing businesses. Town Committee members believe that as an outsider Foley can bring a fresh perspective to the problems Connecticut is facing and the expertise and problem-solving skills he used to fix problems in his businesses can be used to fix Connecticut’s economy and the broken government in Hartford. Committee Chairman Tom Jagodzinski said: “Today, thanks to Democratic spending, our state has the highest per capita debt in the country. It’s unbelievable but we’re actually in worse shape than California. The Democrats’ strategy of spending like crazy and leaving it to our kids and grandkids to straighten out the mess is a ponzi scheme that would have made Bernie Madoff blush. Connecticut desperately needs someone with Tom Foley’s skills to provide a new direction for our state.”

The straw poll showed considerable strength for all three Senate candidates, Linda McMahon, Rob Simmons and Peter Schiff. Jagodzinski said: “We have three terrific candidates running for Senate. Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, the likely Democratic candidate, has high approval ratings but when people start to focus on his anti-business record and his evasiveness on major issues, he’s going to be vulnerable come election time. Blumenthal is probably the only person in the whole world that believes that lawsuits create jobs.  Alice had Wonderland; Blumenthal has the Attorney General’s office. His sometimes frivolous suits are one of the reasons why Connecticut has a nationwide reputation for being the worst state in the country to start a business.”

Based on the results of the straw poll, the Town Committee is likely to endorse Tom Foley for Governor at its April meeting. The Committee will continue to discuss the Senate race in hopes of reaching a consensus before the Republican Convention in May.
