Incumbent U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy easily won Waterbury, the hometown of Republican challenger Sam Caligiuri, making it a sweep of the district’s five big cities Tuesday.
Unofficial results show Murphy taking Waterbury 76,526 to Caligiuri’s 59,349 votes.
Shortly after 10:15 p.m., with 24 of the district’s 41 towns reporting, Murphy had 56 percent of the vote compared to Caligiuri’s 44 percent, unofficial results indicated.
While the smaller towns have been see-sawing between Murphy and Caligiuri, Murphy took all the big cities in the sprawling 5th District — Danbury, New Britain, Meriden, Torrington and Waterbury.
