Malloy, Foley: We won

Left, Tom Foley speaks to his supporters in Greenwich. Right, Dannel Malloy awaits results in Hartford.

And now, we wait for votes.

Both Dannel Malloy and Tom Foley spoke to their supporters — Foley in Greenwich and Malloy in Hartford — around 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, and both of them announced essentially the same thing: We won.

Of course, there can only be one real winner.

We may not know who that winner is for quite some time. There are still significant portions of Hartford, Stamford and Bridgeport ballots that have not been counted. And with the race still close, every vote counts.

With so much at stake, we may not see any concessions anytime soon. Just how long we wait depends on how deep the issues are in Bridgeport, where voting was such an ordeal that polling hours were extended until 10 p.m. That’s a lot of late ballots.

As of 1:40 a.m., they’re still hand counting ballots in several Bridgeport polling places. Some working those polling places have apparently refused to hand count, saying they’ve never been trained to do it, and they’re sending the ballots to City Hall for them to be counted.

An eventful election night indeed.
