Healy wants probe of Bridgeport vote

By Ken Dixon

HARTFORD — Republican Party State Chairman Chris Healy says there were enough election irregularities in Bridgeport to justify a federal investigation. He says that if Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Foley, who lost a narrow race to Democrat Dan Malloy, doesn’t ask the U.S. Attorney’s Office for a probe, then he will.

An overwhelming Democratic turnout in Bridgeport lifted Malloy to victory. To the extent any voters were disenfranchised by a shortage of ballots on Election Day, it’s likely that they were Democrats, not Republicans. So, presumably any elections complaint sought by the GOP would focus instead on whether the election process was so bungled that no one can have confidence in the results.

Democrats, and Mayor Bill Finch, have said the Republicans are engaged in a desperate ploy to find anything that would cast doubt on what clearly was a Malloy victory, albeit by a very slim margin.

Foley, who has yet to concede the election to Malloy, has scheduled a press conference at 1 p.m. today to disclose his plans.
