Union reminds Malloy who helped him get elected

Around the same time new Democratic Governor Dannel Malloy had reached the point in today’s inaugural address where he urged the state to “engage in a shared sense of sacrifice” to help him address a $3.5 billion budget deficit, one state union issued a statement emphasizing the role members played in Malloy’s election.

At a time when some factions are calling for Malloy to seek tough concessions from public employees and others to instead tax the rich, it’s tough not to read the e-mail’s message as a not so subtle reminder, “You owe us, Dan.”

32BJ SEIU Statement on Dan Malloy’s Inauguration Address

The following statement can be attributed to Kurt Westby, Connecticut State Director of 32BJ SEIU:

    • “As a candidate, Dan Malloy promised to get Connecticut back to work, and today, Governor Malloy made clear that his administration will spur state’s economy and create good jobs. There are many challenges ahead, but we look forward to working with Governor Malloy to get our state back on track.”

In support of Malloy, 32BJ SEIU had its largest Connecticut get out the vote operation ever. SEIU has 55,000 members in Connecticut. 32BJ has 4,500 in the state.
