Gomes: I’m not partnering with Foster

BRIDGEPORT — For weeks, the anti-incumbent voters have expressed the desire on blogs and out on the street to see Democratic mayoral candidates Mary-Jane Foster and John M. Gomes tag team to beat Mayor Bill Finch.

Well, Gomes said Friday that’s not happening.

“The citizens of Bridgeport are sick and tired of the way City Hall conducts business as usual because it is controlled by a political machine that will not tolerate reform and a return of honest, transparent policies and practices,” Gomes said, in a release. “I respect Ms. Foster, but it is crystal clear that she cannot deliver the kind of reform needed to revitalize downtown, produce jobs, save our public education system, and make our streets safer. As mayor, she would carry out four more years of Bill Finch.”

“Ms. Foster wants to take control of the machine from Finch and take the reins for herself,” Gomes said. “I want to break the machine and destroy its suffocating hold on this city. I want to give control of this city where it belongs, to the people who live here. Only by breaking the control and power of an old, outdated, and often corrupt political machine that blocks progress, can Bridgeport truly move in a positive new direction.”
