Foster to announce education platform Monday

BRIDGEPORT — Mary-Jane Foster, Democratic candidate for mayor, will announce her education platform Monday.

Foster will host a public event at Gallery 305, 305 Knowlton St., at 6 p.m. After her announcement, the public will have a chance to ask questions and a reception will follow.

“The current mayor and superintendent have given up on fixing education in Bridgeport,” she said, in a news release. “I have the vision and commitment needed to turn around our school system. If elected mayor you can hold me accountable for the education of our children.”

Foster has called for the resignation of both Mayor Bill Finch and Superintendent John Ramos for what she says is a lack of leadership in the management of the city’s school system. Earlier this month, city officials worked with state officials to move forward the Board of Education’s request that it be dismissed and replaced with an appointed panel chosen by soon-to-retire state Commissioner of Education George Coleman.

The state BOE granted the local board’s wish with a 5-4 vote one day after the local board’s 6-3 vote.

UPDATE: Foster announced Friday morning that Bridgeport state senator Edwin Gomes and community activist Marilyn Moore have endorsed her. Foster also has received the endorsement of City Councilman Bob Walsh. See the releases at fosterforbridgeport.com.
