Steady traffic of voters in Shelton

In Shelton’s Sunnyside School, Mike Weber, poll moderator, said that by 2:30, 1,500 of the 5,900 eligible voters had cast ballots.

“I’d be disappointed if we don’t break 2,000,” Weber said in an interview in the school gym. “It all depends on 5 o’clock.”

He said the voting as going smoothly, noting that even though it was well after the lunch hour, there was still steady traffic.

Chris Jones, the Democratic candidate for mayor, said the pace was well short of the turnout from two years ago.

“Shelton has lost its pride in so many different ways,” Jones said in an interview in the school parking lot.

But state Rep. Jason Perillo, R-Shelton, said incumbent Mayor Mark Lauretti deserves re-election.

“What I hear more than anything else from folks is to keep property taxes low,” Perillo said. “That’s the number-one issue and I think Mark Lauretti’s record on that is pretty solid.”
