Shays banks $522K in 4th quarter

Former U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays speaks at the Cos Cob Republican Club and Greenwich Republican Town Committee's 80th annual clambake Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011, at Greenwich Point.

Former Congressman Christopher Shays is trumpeting his fourth quarter fundraising numbers for his U.S. Senate candidacy, which were released today by his campaign.

One of five Republicans running for the seat of retiring incumbent Joe Lieberman, Shays raised $422,145 from 749 individual donors.

Shays and his wife Betsi also loaned the campaign $100,000 from their personal funds.

“I’m asking people to join something special – a revolution to get our country back on track and our fellow Americans back to work,” Shays said in a statement Friday.

While Shays filed paperwork to run in October with the Federal Election Commission, his formal campaign kickoff will be held at noon Wednesday, Jan. 25,  in front of the Old State House in Hartford.

To put his fundraising haul in perspective, fellow Republican Linda McMahon spent 100 times that amount on her 2010 candidacy for the same office.

McMahon, who is running again and accepting donations from individuals this go around, has not released her fundraising totals yet.
