Different candidate, same playbook?

Former Congressman Christopher Shays (right) is trying to do something his former GOP colleague in the House, Rob Simmon (left) could not -- beat Linda McMahon in a Republican Senate primary. Simmons was on hand Wednesday for Shays' formal campaign kickoff at the Old State House in Hartford.

Former U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons, who lost a three-way GOP Senate primary to Linda McMahon in 2010, spent much of that campaign railing against WWE (formerly World Wrestling Entertainment) under McMahon and the company’s treatment of its wrestlers.

Fast forward to 2012, and Simmons has not only endorsed Chris Shays over McMahon in this year’s Senate primary tilt, but he endorsed his former colleague’s indictment of the WWE.

In an interview with Hearst Connecticut Newspapers, Simmons said that if McMahon is going to hold up her company as a model of corporate success and job creation, WWE is fair game.

“So let’s look carefully at the business,” Simmons said. “What’s the nature of the product? These are real legitimate questions that anybody should ask.”
