Dannel Malloy, political peacemaker

State Rep. William Tong’s, D-Stamford announcement he’s dropping out of the U.S. Senate race to support U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy’s bid was brokered about a week ago with Governor Dannel Malloy at the Governor’s Residence in Hartford.

Murphy in a brief interview following their public 12:30 p.m. truce confirmed the meeting, as did Tong afterward.

“It was just a good discussion,” Tong said.

Malloy, who with Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman today also attended the event to endorse Murphy, told reporters he wants party delegates and unnamed other candidates (Cough. Ex-Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz. Cough) to unite behind Murphy for a tough race to replace retiring “independent Democratic” U.S. Senator Joseph Lieberman.

On a related note, Tong’s campaign confirmed he was the only Senate candidate to have promised in mid-April to release his tax returns but didn’t ’cause he was planning on exiting the race.
