Weinstein is big Obama supporter (but not afraid to shoot down his movie pitches)

Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein has long been an outspoken supporter of President Barack Obama.

Weinstein, who’s co-hosting a $38,500 per head fundraiser for Obama with Anne Hathaway at his beachfront home in Westport tonight, has donated more than $75,000 to democratic candidates this election cycle, including a $35,800 check to Obama’s campaign, according to The Huffington Post. He has co-hosted past fundraisers for the President in New York and California.

But Weinstein is not without criticism of POTUS. After last month’s movie theater massacre in Aurora, Colo., Weinstein criticized Obama for not taking a stronger stance on gun control.

Weinstein is also apparently not afraid to turn down the president’s movie pitch. In a March interview with the Times of London, Weinstein said Obama sent him a spy novel and suggested he adapt it into a Hollywood film. Weinstein said he  rejected the president’s pitch via email.

“I sent him an email back saying he was the most overqualified book scout I’ve ever had,” the news site The Wrap said he told the Times of London reporter.
