A rainy day plan

TREASURE ISLAND, Fla. — It’s not quite a desert island.

But the hotel where conventioneers from Connecticut are spending the week is on a barrier island.

Doh.

So how are Republicans from our state spending what was supposed to be the first day of the convention?

Scene: Connecticut GOP Chairman Jerry Labriola Jr. doing push-ups in the sand behind the Bilmar Beach Resort in between squalls.

Scene: State House Minority Leader Lawrence Cafero, R-141st District, taking advantage of the hotel’s fitness center and then stepping outside for a smoke immediately after.

Scene: Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton hitting up a discount outlet store, Bealls.

Jack Dalrymple, the Republican governor of North Dakota, which is staying at the same hotel, was the guest speaker at a breakfast for the Connecticut GOP.

He was touting his state’s under 3 percent unemployment rate.

Some delegates took the opportunity of down time to go see the anti-Obama movie “2016: Obama’s America” at a nearby theater.
