Corporations may be like people, too, sez SEC

by:

Interesting stuff going down at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which is considering a requirement to force publicly traded companies to disclose political contributions.

Whoa! That could be huge. But at the front of the Ticked-Off Line are trade associations like the U.S. Chamber, which dropped $30 milllllllllllllllllllllllion last year on campaigns to beat Democrats. Trade associations are nonprofits, so they don’t have to list their donors — which is why companies like to funnel their political contributions through them.

The Chamber says such political contributions are so small that investors don’t need to worry about them. But since they’re, uh, not disclosed, investors don’t know if that’s true.

While overturning any aspect of the election finance-reshaping Citizens United Supreme Court decision have not gotten far, this proposed rule change got 322,000 favorable responses to a petition sent to the SEC, believed to be the most ever. Citizens United allowed for unlimited spending by corporations, unions and individuals.

But if publicly traded outfits had to disclose who they were giving campaign contributions to, they might be a little more reticent about alienating any potential customers. This will be interesting to follow.

Gov. Jerry Brown, former AG, slams Oakland, praises Obama on gun violence

by:

California Gov. Jerry Brown, the former state Attorney General, had some praise for President Obama — and some tough words for Oakland leaders today — on the issue of gun violence.

Brown made the statements to Chronicle education writer Nanette Asimov while attending a University of California Regents meeting in San Francisco.

The California governor, who is also the former Mayor of Oakland, was asked specifically about the bloody rash of gun violence in Oakland, which has killed dozens in the last months on the city’s streets.

He was unusually pointed about the situation in the city, now headed by Oakland Mayor Jean Quan.

“Oakland has to find out what it wants,” he said.
“Some in Oakland want zero police. So the city council has a very tough job. So do the police. Oakland can’t deliver a mixed message. The leadership of that city has to show the way.”

Asked his reaction to Obama’s gun control measures, the former California Attorney General said that the Golden State already “has very strong gun control laws.”

But he said, “the missing ingredient is (the problem of) guns from other states. National legislation is crucial.”

Murphy unfiltered on the NRA: what’s next, arming kids?

by:

—-

Connecticut’s freshman Sen. Chris Murphy publicly dissed the National Rifle Association via Twitter this afternoon over its support of arming teachers in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.

“I would honestly not be surprised if the NRA proposes next that all school children be armed. These guys are unreal,” Murphy Tweeted.

Murphy’s Twitter beef with the gun lobby comes in response to the release of a controversial new NRA television ad that attempts to paint President Obama as an “elitist hypocrite” for sending his two daughters to school with armed guards while the children of most Americans do not get the same benefit.

CA’s Dianne Feinstein praises Obama for acting with “urgency” on gun control

by:

California U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein Wednesday praised President Obama’s call for a comprehensive gun control program, saying he and Vice President Biden have acted on the issue with “the urgency it deserves.”

She said the new legislation to reintroduce the assault weapons bans, which she will sponsor, now deserves a full hearing in the Senate, and as soon as possible.

Here’s her full statement:

“I have deep respect and admiration for President Obama and Vice President Biden for the comprehensive and commonsense reforms they outlined this morning. They spoke with conviction and compassion for the victims of gun violence in this country, and I applaud them for tackling this plague of violence with the urgency it deserves.

“The executive actions and proposals announced today will dramatically improve the background check system, protect law enforcement and resume gun violence research in this country.

“Finally, I support the president’s call to reinstate the ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines. He was exactly right when he said ‘weapons designed for the theater of war have no place’ in our society. I couldn’t agree more. These weapons have one purpose: to kill the most people in the shortest amount of time possible.

“Next week, Senate and House cosponsors will introduce legislation to prohibit the sale, transfer, manufacture and importation of assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition feeding devices that carry more than 10 rounds. I hope that Chairman Leahy will hold hearings on this bill in the Judiciary Committee as soon as possible.”

Republicans ALREADY targeting Ami Bera, John Garamendi for 2014

by:

Welcome back to the continuous campaign, where the fundraising and politicking never stops. That’s why the National Republican Congressional Committee
just rolled out their list of 40 targeted seats for 2014 — it’s never too early to start shopping for Christmas — and on it are Northern California Democratic Reps. John Garamendi, D-Walnut Grove and Ami Bera, D-Elk Grove.

Curiously not on the list is perennial target Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Stockton. Yet.

Other Californians on the list, including some just-electeds who are still learning where the House bathrooms are, include: Reps. Jim Costa, D-Fresno, Lois Capps, D-Santa Barbara, Julia Brownley, D-Santa Monica, Raul Ruiz,D-Palm Desert, and Scott Peters, D-San Diego.

Likely-to-be (our new designation) California GOP Chair Jim Brulte told me several of those names were on his list of targeted seats as well.

The NRCC’s inspiration, however, lies in San Francisco, according to a memo sent Wednesday by Liesl Hickey, NRCC Executive Director:
“Republicans will continue the offensive strategy that again led to success in 2012, to keep Nancy Pelosi from ever being Speaker of the House again.”

Aggressive new NRA ad takes on “elitist hypocrite” Obama — and his kids (VIDEO)

by:

The NRA’s new ad, released today, attacks President Obama as an “elitist hypocrite” and even brings his daughters in the debate.
And it’s sure to fire up both sides on a day when the White House is expected to release its agenda on gun control; but even some GOP strategists say the organization’s aim is way off the mark in this one, and criticizing it as a questionable strategy.

And the White House — in a response just released according to AP — calls the spot “repugnant and cowardly.”

Take a look:

“Are the president’s kids more important than yours?” the ad asks. “Then why is he skeptical about putting armed guards in our schools..when his kids are protected by armed guards in their schools?”

With a photo that includes California U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, the ad closes on the announcer saying of Obama:
“He’s just another elitist hypocrite when it comes to a fair share of security,” it says. “Protections for THEIR kids, and gun free zones for ours.”

Washington DC-based GOP strategist Kim Alfano, speaking on MSNBC’s “Daily Rundown” today, slammed the ad as a bad strategy and bad messaging.
“I can’t believe” the NRA took that approach, she told host Chuck Todd.

What’s the reaction here? Too much — and over the top?
Or NRA bulls eye?
