McKinney’s new domain: governor

State Senate Minority Leader John McKinney, R-Fairfield, seems to have tipped his hand that he will run for governor in 2014.

The same day that House Minority Leader Lawrence Cafero of Norwalk announced he would not run for governor because of family considerations, the domain registry service GoDaddy.com shows that the website McKinneyforConnecticut.com was snatched up June 27 by a McKinney confidante.

GoDaddy.com lists the registrant as Jack Shannon, who serves as chief of staff for the Senate Republicans. The domain name expires June 27, 2015.

McKinney has been silent for the most part in the week since Cafero’s announcement, fueling speculation that he is plotting a bid for the GOP nomination next year.

The veteran lawmaker and son of the late 4th District Congressman Stewart McKinney is believed to be positioning himself as a chief alternative to Tom Foley, who is seeking a rematch with first-term Gov. Dannel P. Malloy after losing by just 6,500 votes in 2010.

A message seeking comment was left Wednesday for McKinney by Hearst Connecticut Newspapers.
