The yeoman’s task of running for Congress in the 4th District, where the GOP is desperately trying to fill a void, is drawing strong interest from Stamford Republican Chris Meek, according to a person familiar with his plans.
Meek, 42, finished a distant second to fellow Republican Steve Obsitnik at the party’s nominating convention in 2012 and opted to suspend his campaign rather than primary. Obsitnik went on to lose the general election in a landslide to Jim Himes, a Democrat now in his third term who is national finance chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
Meek, who works in investment management for State Street Global Advisors, declined to comment about his political plans.
Married with three small children, Meek founded the Stamford Young Republicans, a group that evolved into Our CT Grand Young Party and touts itself as having several hundred members statewide.
In July 2009, Meek launched SoldierSocks, a Stamford-based nonprofit that has shipped more than 30,000 pounds of supplies such as tube socks, baby wipes and other toiletries to troops overseas, according to its website.
Meek also runs Start Now!, a 501(c)(3) organization that helps people with distressed home loans.
He “retired” from a career as a trader of equity derivatives at Goldman Sachs, the former employer of Himes, to run for Congress.
