Susan Bysiewicz is out of the public eye, but not the Federal Election Commission’s eye.
More than a year removed from her unsuccessful bid for the U.S. Senate, the former secretary of the state is sitting on a pile of leftover campaign cash, some of which Bysiewicz recently bequeathed to fellow Democrats through her still active campaign committee.
Susan Bysiewicz for Connecticut gave $1,000 to both U.S. Elizabeth Esty and Jim Himes on Sept. 28 and Sept. 30, according to the FEC.
As of June 30, Bysiewicz had $17,669 cash on hand. But a third quarter accounting from Bysiewicz, who resides in Middletown and was disqualified from running for state attorney general in 2010 by the state Supreme Court because she was not a practicing lawyer, was not available.
Bysiewicz, 52, appears to have missed an Oct. 15 filing deadline for her committee’s campaign finance report. On Nov. 1, the FEC flagged Bysiewicz with a “failure to file” notice.
“The failure to timely file a complete report may result in civil money penalties, an audit
or legal enforcement action,” the FEC wrote.
A request for comment was left Monday for Bysiewicz, who was briefly a candidate for governor in 2010 and later lost to Chris Murphy in the 2012 Democratic Senate primary. Bysiewicz served as secretary of the state from 1999 to 2011.
