Shelton Planning and Zoning race/length of terms could be decided by Secretary of the State

Shelton Democrats did not run anyone against two Republicans for the two-year terms on the Planning and Zoning Commission; and two for four-year terms. Apparently the charter wasn’t crafted tightly enough. “They left no provision for how the three members for four-years was going to be determined,” said David Gioiello Jr., the Democratic mayoral candidate who is also Town Committee chairman. “So we nominated our two people and when we went to file our paperwork the City Clerk said ‘you have to tell us are they running for two year or four year.’ And I made the decision to run them for four-year terms. I’m assuming we’re going to be the minority party again and we’re guaranteed two seats.” For the four-year terms, there are four people running and voters have to pick three. “Do we get the two four-year seats or will one of our people be bounced back? I’ve already brought it up to the Secretary of the State’s office and they said we’ll have to get a legal opinion on that.”
