Conventional wisdom: which towns have the most GOP delegates

The deadline for both state parties to certify their lists of delegates to their upcoming conventions is Wednesday.

With that in mind, we thought we would take a closer look at which cities and towns command the most delegates, starting with the Republicans and using a valuable new interactive mapping tool called Tableau that we hope to utilize throughout the mid-term election cycle.

Here’s why you should care about the delegate math: the choice voters get in the November election for governor will be significantly shaped by the endorsement of GOP delegates at their May 16-17 convention at Mohegan Sun.

Greenwich is the richest in Republican delegates with 22, followed by Stamford (19) and Danbury (18).

The 2nd Congressional District, which covers a vast swath of eastern Connecticut, commands the most delegates with 301.

A majority of the 1,250 to 1,300 delegates is required to capture the GOP endorsement for statewide office at the convention. Candidates mustering 15 percent of the vote are automatically placed on the August primary ballot.

Directions: hover your mouse in the upper left corner of the map and click on the zoom tool (a rectangular box with a + sign). Now you can zoom in on a region or municipality. Hover your mouse arrow over the dot corresponding to the city or town to see its delegate total.
