Parties send in reinforcements in the 61st House District

It’s a dress rehearsal for November.

Republicans and Democrats are treating this week’s special election in the 61st House District that way.

Voters in East Granby, Suffield and part of Windsor will go to the polls Friday to fill a vacancy created by the death of Democratic State Rep. Elaine O’Brien of brain cancer in February.

Both parties sent in their big guns to campaign with their respective candidates, Democrat Peter Hill and Republican Tami Zawistokowski.

U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., went door to door with Hill over the weekend to try to ensure the district stays in Democratic control.

The Democrats also dispatched Congressman Joe Courtney and state House Speaker Brendan Sharkey to the 61st District to help Hill.

Not to be outdone, Republican gubernatorial contender Tom Foley made the rounds with Zawistowksi during the weekend, in addition to state GOP Chairman Jerry Labriola Jr.
