Shelton’s McGorty defeats Stratford’s Vickerelli in 122nd

Ben McGorty of Shelton has bested challenger Michael C. Vickerelli of Stratford in the Republican primary for 122nd district senate seat. McGorty, 50, won 713 to 441. “I was pleasantly surprised with the results,” he said. “We had no idea how this would turn out.” Meanwhile, Vickerelli, 66, said the defeat hasn’t soured him on politics. “I’m definitely going to stay in politics,” he said. “I’m thinking about running again, but we’ll have to see.” A special election in the district, which encompasses a chunk of Shelton, a northern piece of Stratford and a sliver of Trumbull, took place three weeks ago. McGorty won and was sworn in to a seat that had been held by veteran state Rep. Larry Miller, who died May 31.
