Campaign event, coffer-dam celebration or pre-debate practice for Malloy

WETHERSFIELD – Gov. Dannel P. Malloy just held a news conference in Wethersfield, across Goff Brook from Rocky Hill, to tout the state’s commitment to repairing highways and bridges. Cited as one of the worst in infrastructure maintenance in the nation, Malloy bragged that under his administration there has been a 165-percent increase in transportation spending. The transfer of money from the state’s dedicated Transportation Fund has become an issue in the 2014 race for governor. While Malloy stood behind a podium in an official event for governor, the conveniently placed “Job Jobs Jobs” sign nearby indicated that he was combining work with campaigning. Malloy faces Tom Foley on Wednesday night in Norwich, in the first gubernatorial debate. Behind Malloy at his news conference was an expanse of Middletown Avenue where the former bridge was located over Goff Brook, but which now is the site of a complete two-lane bridge rebuild, with a coffer dam below, diverting the 15-foot-wide brook away from the north bank while workers complete footings. Adding a bipartisan flavor to the event was Rep. David Scribner, R-Brookfield, seen below with Malloy, ranking member of the legislative Transportation Committee, who declined to speak to gubernatorial politics.davidanddan
